96/302

Hi all, (oil pan leak and new cam) Have a 1996 5.0/302 stock, roller lifter, carburated, headers and Gt40p heads with stock compression. Installed it in my 1968 truck year ago. The oil pan (no front sump) old type is leaking badly. Could be leaking because useing differant oil pan I used a one pcs gasket?

Going to pull motor out to fix. When I do, want to put in a new cam. I use it for around town driving and towing looking for better performance what cam would you go with? Was told it had a 5.0 mustang cam in it that's all I know. That's why I'm thinking of changing out cam?

Define "better performace", it means something different to everybody.

Thanks for your reply! Better performance = little better than stock for around town driving and towing boat and a 12' closed in trailer use for kart raceing and some hauling. The truck has low gears it runs around 1800 to 2400 and at around town stops and go, 35 - 50 mph most of the time. Just wondered because I changed the motor to a carburated (Edelbrock Performer manifold and a 600 carb.), if another cam would be better?

My real main concern here is the oil leak problem what method would you use when installing oil pan? I had never looked but seemed to have heard there is a diffrerance and can be a problem? Again Thanks!

Oh it also has a auto. C4, has long tube headers, 2.5 exhaust H pipe w/ flow masters. Gets about as good of mph gas as my new truck depends on how hard I drive it. Do at time's show the imports what a American Ford is! It's to funny to watch how they think their going to get in front of this old truck! (Me and my truck two old clunkers) LOL.

It would be good to know or sure what cam the motor has, lots of guys refer to the late model truck motors are a "HO" but that is a mistake because those motors don't have the HO cam. When you pull the engine measure the intake lobe lift, 0.264" is the '94+ truck cam, 0.277" is the HO cam.
In any event it sounds like you would like some more low rpm TQ, unfortunately the 5.0 isn't a great TQ producer and while another cam will have an impact(Comp 35-510-8) it won't make a hugh difference to the bottom end so maybe consider simply advancing the existing cam a couple degrees and adding 1.7 rockers to increase valve lift. This motor will have a 1-piece rear seal in it and to guarantee no oilpan leaks in the furure go to Ford and get a 1-piece rubber coated steel core pan gasket, they're not at all expensive and are probably the best gasket available.

This motor came out of a 96 explorer and has a 5.0 cam in it, my son builded the motor first time we ever had a oil pan leak. The motor has around 10,000 miles on it. Yes I agree 1.7 rockers would be what I was thinking of, if there was not a cam that would work better. Also have plans on new performance valve spring's for it, heard that is a down fall on 40p's. Thanks Conanski. Anyone else have any imput? While I have motor out? I'm a jack of all trades but master of none.
