I have a 94, 4.0 Auto. The problem I just noticed this weekend for the 1st time is when I kick it into passing gear tach hits 4,000rpm and the battery light comes on and guage goes to bottom. as soon as it shifts out of 2nd the light goes out and guage reads normal charge. The belt is also only about a year old.
I Checked the alt, at idle and 2,000 rpm and get 13.8 & 14.2 volts depending on load. I can,t check it at 4,000 rpm because of the rev limiter!
Has anyone ever had this problem or could tell me what else to look for or check?
You could hook a voltmeter into an open slot in the fuse box... watch it while you drive. I'd say the alternator is a likely culprit. I've seem many that quit charging at very high revolutions.. then charge fine when they slow down.
You will get those symptoms when the alternator brushes wear down. I would try replacing the brushes first.....don't forget to disconnect the negative battery cable before messing with the alternator.
