I have a 84 bronco and i cant get it to start. It has a 5.8 liter motor,4 wheel drive, air conditioning, I have replaced the rotor, and the coil, the battery is brand new,it is getting gas but still will not start. its like its not getting spark. please help me Thanks
Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will attempt to get you the most accurate info we can muster.
Have you got voltage at the ignition coil? I'd check for it there first. If there is no voltage going into the coil, it certainly won't come back out. If there is voltage at the coil, the next step is the ignition "brain". In 84 Ford was still using the Duraspark setup if I recall correctly. The "brain" is an aluminum box mounted on one of the inner fenders. It will have a couple-three round electrical connectors hanging from it. Some of the major parts chains can test these units for you but you will have to remove it from the truck. Make certain you disconnect the battery before disconnecting this module because if its not the culprit you can kill it by disconnecting it with electricity running through it. If it is the problem it has to be replaced with a module for the exact same year, engine, model vehicle that it came out of.
Hey,thanks for all feedback and help I went out and bought a ignition module for 20.00 bucks and the thing fired right up. You guys are a great help thanks again.

I never had these problems we always swapped modules between trucks to see if it was the problem,
My truck is curently running a module I stole from one of our worn out hunting trucks , it was a 78 f-100 with a 302 and my truck has a 351w.
I just got the truck from a guy who wanted it out of his driveway i towed it home put a battery in it and it started. I drove it for a couple of days then it wouldnt start. I put a new rotor in it,and a new coil.still wouldnt start. I never thought of the ignition module.
What year did they go to TFI system? I have an '84 Bronco, 351W that has TFI.
I wish it had duraspark.
D
Oh dear lord, did I really just read that? The TFI was first seen as early as 84 but many of the light trucks didn't see them right away. The Duraspark system is unreliable at best and has absolutely NO provision for making internal corrections as the engine wears in and ages. If the timing chain gets a little old or the vavle train gets a little sloppy the Duraspark setup doesn't really care it keeps the exact same spark timing regardless. Makes it really tough to keep an older engine running well and tends to give people the general impression that Fords had with the expression "Found On Road Dead". The 80's weren't kind to any American auto makers but the Duraspark was an exercise in trial and error...it was an error. Purely an opinion on my part I've just been down the Durapsark road with many different vehicles and time and again its discovered to be at the root of the problems.
