Most off the company's on this board sell parts to do it. DO NOT USE MAC'S they stiffed me for four months then said sorry!
The common parts that go are.
1) Shifter sleave (alum), and rubber bushing. The hole where the shifter goes in ovals.
2) nylon sepertor plate. inside with shifter plates
3) column bushings x2
4) column bearings x2
Most of the eraly bronco stuf works here. So I got mine from Jeffs Bronco graveyard.
When I converted my '66 to automatic, I had the original column that I left intact and my extra "parts" column I took apart. There are several plastic washer-type parts in the lower end that keeps the internal linkage from contacting itself. There are bearings both top and bottom. The rag joints of course like to deteriorate with age too. By chance, if you are looking for a 3spd column, let me know and we can discuss it!
I have a 1963 3 speed on the column (3 on the tree) and I am having problems shifting in and out of 2nd gear. Going in and out of 2nd the truck will pop out of gear and you can't get it back in unless you crawl under the truck and move the arms coming out of the tranny by hand. Then it pops back into gear and I can usually get a 1-2 shifts before I have to crawl under the truck again! argh
Any idea what I dealing with? Is this due to bushings in the steering column, or maybe the synchronizer in the tranny?
Also, how loose should the linkage be from the base of the steering column to the tranny? Mine seems pretty loose.
I think you need a Linkage bushing kit. There are four rubber gromites with steel or brass incerts that go at the ends of the linkage. Sounds like your moving the linkage enough to get it out of gear and half way in to the next and pops out cause it din't move all the way.
Any of the "resto" places have the linkage bushing kits.
I have to agree with 44dwarf - my '64 was doing exactly the same thing as you describe, I replaced the linkage bushings and just like that I was back in business!!
Hello all.
I have a 63 F-100 that is doing the same thing. 2nd gear and reverse.
I looked at Mac's, Concourse, Dennis Carpenter, Autokrafters, Johns F100's and called LMC. No luck. Anyone have a specific source ?
