Can anyone identify this weird fish?

My daughter took this picture yesterday at a place called Cecret Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah. (AKA: Secret Lake)
http://community.webshots.com/myphot...ecurity=dsKVqK

I can't tell if it has gills or what. Can anyone who knows more about fish tell me what it is?

I cropped and enhanced the above picture. Here is her original shot of it:http://community.webshots.com/photo/...58881813Iebczp

It's not a fish, it's a salamander or newt. An amphibious lizard. I recall seeing pics of that species with the neck fringe before, but I don't know the name of it.

That's why I see no gills!

But is this thing still in its morphing stage? Because I thought they have legs. I had no idea these can live in high elevation cold water lakes. And it sure looks awful big for a salamander. Maybe it's an eryops. This area has some distinction as dinosaur country.

Thanks!

Sure looks to me like it has hind legs in the pics. You probably can't see the front legs under the neck frills. Check this out:

I grew up in south west Ohio. We'd catch those occasionally down at the creek. We called them mud puppies. At least that's what it looks like to me best I can remember.

It's a salamander of some sorts, might still be a juvenile, those neck fringes add to the skin surface area and help it to breath underwater.

Yup, mud puppy...I'd forgotten that name. Just another name for a type of salamander.
