I have a 1995 Ranger 4cyl 5 speed that I can not get to pass emissions testing in my state. The check engine light stays on. I had the code checked at an autoparts place and they said I needed to change the EGR valve and make sure the EGR flow tube (tube connecting EGR to manifold) is clear. I did both of these, but the light came back on. I took it to a repair shop and he gave me the following codes: P1443 -small or no purge flow condition and P0401 - EGR flow insufficient detected. I also had the catalic converter tested and was told it was okay. The shop wants $200.00 to do further tests just to tell me exactly what needs to be replaced according to the above codes. Can someone tell me what I need to replace or repair? I really dont have $200 to just get someone to tell me what else needs to be fixed. Thanks Keith....
Well on the P0401 code, IF all the EGR system vacuum lines. orfaces & hoses check out ok, I might then suspect a faulty DPFE sensor, as it trigges the EGR valve & is a common problem part in this system.
On the P1443, could be a number of things, from a faulty gas cap, pinched, plugged, or dryrotted/leaking vacuum hose/s to the vapor recovery system, or a faulty purge solenoid to the vapor recovery tank.
Look in the "Technical Info" thread, atop this forum, for more info on the components of these systems & how to locate & test them.
