should be a SOHC with 2v/cylinder rated at 239 hp, and 282 tq.. The 3v went in for the 06 model year. Transmission should be a 5R55E I believe. 5sp transmission. I have two Explorers, an 03 4.0 and an 05 4.6. Both 4x4. I really like them both a lot, however, I like the 05 because it is more luxurious.
Should have a part time type 4x4. Well, kind of. Do you know if it has AdvanceTrac with RSC?? The '05 models came with it standard.
-If it does have advancetrac, there will be open differentials at front and rear with a 3.73 rear end. The vehicle pulses the ABS to simulate an LSD and cuts engine power to help regain traction. The system is designed to try and keep the vehicle moving even if 3 wheels are off the ground. I take it as saying the system is smart enough to transfer torque and power efficiently enough to know which wheel has most traction.
-If it does NOT have advancetrac, you have a 3.73 rear differential with either a clutch type Limited slip, OR an open rear. The earlier 3.73 clutch type limited slips were prone to make loud whining noises as they wore, but rebuilding the diff fixed that. Our '03 had that but it was reshimed and built and it works great now.
The basic 4wd system operates the same regardless of which transfer devices you have (advancetrac or not). I believe the front axle is a Dana 35, I am not sure though. I think the halfshafts are always turning, and that the hubs dictate when the vehicle is in 4x4, similar to the Ranger. There is 4x4 auto which makes the vehicle operate in your normal rwd mode until the computer senses slippage, then the front gets power. 4x4 high is the next mode, meaning you are locked in 4x4, and 4wd low is of course like every other 4wd low. I should add, never use 4x4 hi or low on dry hard surfaces, however, with open diffs at both ends, I don't see why it is as big of a deal as an LSD rear... Hope this is the long winded answer to your question...
The gas tank should be 22.5 gallons mid mount. The reserve should be around 4-5 gallons I believe. There is a box with a sticker on it under the dash on the driver's side on Expeditions with the code on it, I don't know if Explorers are the same. I hear the sticker sometimes isn't where it should be. If you go to a dealer they may hook it up for the code for free. When you do get the code, if you enter it then hit 5/6 it will open the back glass, and 3/4 will unlock all the doors. 7/8 9/0 at the same time locks all doors. Just in case you were wondering what else it did.
