Underbed gas tank

Does anybody have any measurements on an Underbed tank from a 70's model F-100? This is one route I am looking at currently. I am looking for the rear tank.

Thanks,

Kyle

the 61-67 Econoline uses what looks like a Mustang tank with a side fill. The tank will slide into the frame rails just like the Mustang. I am not sure of the capacity though.

Will the Econoline rear tanks fit a 62 f100 as well? It would be great to utilize the room behind the seat for tools, speakers, and stuff...Jason

Who sells an old Econoline tank? I'm sure the ones in the boneyard aren't much good.

Kyle, take a look at 65-68 Mustang tanks. I have seen them used under pickup beds of several different types of trucks. They are readily available from Mustang suppliers like National Parts Depot and others.

A couple of problems with the Mustang tanks. You have to trim at least a half inch off from each side of your frame to get the tank to slide in. The hole for the filler tube is on top, so you would have to cut a hole in your bed to fill it through. The Econoline tanks are a side fill design, si the install looks stock.

If the stock filler is in the cab how did you get the econoline tank to look stock? Or are you saying it locks stock because it comes out the side of the bed? Just woundering.

Yes, you do have to put the filler neck in the bed, but of all the trucks I've seen using the Mustang tank, that's where they wanted the neck for easier filling. It just depends on what you want...

Underbed gas tank

I picked up a late 70's F-250 under bed tank (rear mount) buit unfortunately the tank has holes rusted in it. So I'll be taking it back to where I got it from....Maybe they'll have another one for me.

It doesn't have the emmissions connections and all that good junk so I'm good there. Plus it fit the frame rails perfectly 35 inches across from outside of mounting flange to outside of mounting flange.

The filler neck is on the drivers side of the tank and would come up inside the bed, in the floor.

Thanks, I'll be posting again hopefully when I can find another tank.....

Yeah, I guess I was misleading when I mentioned the stock looking install. I meant looking stock compared to the tanks that were factory installed in the rear of the truck in later models trucks. And as far as people wanting the filler in the bed for easier filling, well that's pretty silly. How is that easier then having a filler door in the side of the bed with a hidden gas cap? The filler in the bed would get in the way for anybody who uses their truck like a truck, and could even get damaged. It would be fine for a trailer queen or a show truck. Mounting it in the bed floor is just a compromise. People do it because the Mustang tank is readily available, and through the bed floor is the only place the filler will go. Not because they prefer it there. I would also rather not cut off part of my frame to make it fit. Sorry, but that late 70's tank will not fit a 65-72 frame. We only have 27 1/4" inbetween the lower frame rails flange at the narrowest point. I knew that to be fact, but I just went out and measured my 65 and my 70. That's why the Econoline tank is such an attractive swap. It's the only Ford truck of that era that had a rear mounted tank, and the frame is the same width as the 65- 72.

Well, that's the measurements I came up with from the inside of the frame rails at the very back of the truck. If all else fails, and right now it is looking that way. I'll go to a local supplier, and get either a 35 or 40 gallon tank that mounts to the front of the truck bed and plumb that in instead.....
