I remember wondering the SAME thing when I got my "X"... LOL
I recall an old posting on the subject.. (I'll look for it). I think it may have been a former ash tray set-up and rather than re-do the dash, they covered it up with the hook insert.. (please note this is based on a self admitted faulty memory system)
I also recall that some folks beleive it is to hang a purse or hat...If your female passenger is at all like my wife, her purse would probably pull the damn thing off due to weight...! I have tried to hang a garbage bag from it, but unless you use a rubber band to hold it in place, anything on that hook just falls off..
Perhaps we should start a thread asking for the cleverest usage for the "hooky thing" as you called it
I'm loving this truck so far - I'm really surprised at how manueverable it is in parking lots. I've found it more maneverable than my F150 was.
I do have one puzzeling question though - what is the little hooky thing for on the lower half of the dash? I've noticed it on all Ford SDs, but I really don't know what it's for - does anybody? That hooky thing - just below and to the right of the cigar lighter... what is it?
That is where the ash tray would go on a truck with the smoker package, IMO. Never used the one on my 04EX. but is sure i pretty. And its a power point, not a cigar lighter - lets all be politiclly correct now.

Nope - that one had a lighter in it, therefore it is a cigar lighter. now the one high up on the dash with the little slide open door, is a powerpoint. Politically correctness... - I call it what it is
The ashtray used to be there when the SuperDuty first came out. Since then, the ashtray has been relocated to between the cupholders on the pull-out cupholder. That was redesigned because it wasn't a cupholder but more of a cupspiller.
In Ford effort to cut costs, they molded that trashbag hook cover for it. We all know it is too low to put a regular sized trashbag (Wal-Mart bag) and it is only really good for a really small bag holder. On guy hangs his CB radio mike there.
We had a thread a few years back on the best uses of that silly hook. It was a very entertaining thread and can be found in the Super Duty forum.

Told my wife that it is where she hangs her purse. That way when the fire road gets rough she won't dump her stuff all over. (you do what it takes to get your toys!)
the "hookey thing" is to hang a "garbage baggie thing" on. I use the space in the front of the console though, so my hookey thing is a air freshener hangy thing.
