I've been shopping around quite some time now for a used X and wanted to throw out some questions that I had. Before I begain, here's a little background - I've decided on the v10 because of the $ of a diesel. I will be towing with this X and I know diesels are much better for towing, but I cannot put the xtra ~$5k. I'm looking in the 00-03 model year range.
Now for the questions...
- I've hear there are 2 different v10 engines that were used and that one has more HP than the other - if this is true, how can I identify the engines?
- I've looked at several that had the small "sport" mirrors, but I want the extendable towing mirrors - if i bought one with the sport type, how hard are they to switch out? (fully electric w/ heat) I priced them from Ford (~$400), but will shop around before buying.
- I currently have a SuperChip 1715 that I use for my F150, and plan on using it for the X - what kind of performance improvements can I expect?
Anything else anyone wishes they knew before buying thier X?
The mirror swap is very easy. Go for the trailer tow mirrors from post '04 if you can. These have turn signals / clearance lights. I don't know if '00 - '02 is as easy as my '03 was, but I completed the swap in about 45 minutes. I never did hook up the clearance lights, but this can be done by running a wire back to the dash switch. Do a search. I know there are instructions out there for doing this.
You don't have to worry about the different HP V10 engines as the Excursion only came with the 310hp version.
Make sure you get a year that is compatible with the 1715. Looks for firmer shifts and more top end pull with that programmer. Also look for a slightly higher fuel bill but one that is offset by the increase in driveability and power (IMHO...or at least it was for my 04 F150)
You'll be pleasantly surprised by the towing ability of the V10. It just ain't the dog people think it is. Or at least neither of mine were (are). How much weight do you tow?

Rightnow, we have a 25ft Travel Trailer that has a loaded weight of ~6200 lbs (I weighed on the way to FL this summer), but we plan on getting a bigger one in the future. According to Ford, a X with the v10 and 3.73 gears will pull about 10k.
My X hauls my 8500 lb 31 ft Jayco around with no problems at all. Hell, we probably exceed the GCWR when everything is considered and it's still plenty of truck. We'll be weighing the whole rig on a trp coming up in the near future. Got the spot all picked out.
I thought the V-10 needed higher octane fuel to support the use of a chip?

Yep - SuperChips says that you have to run at least 91 oct. But I've found with my 5.4 and the chip, that I get 2-3 more per gallon - so the cost is offset. With 87 oct I average $0.12 per mile, with 92 oct I average $0.11 per mile.
have you considered a diesel, higher towing limit, longer engine life, high Mile Per gallon
they also hold there value alot better
Yes I have, but every one that I find is out of my budget limit. I've also crunched some numbers and in the long term it just doesn't add for me. The towing limit is any different (when the gear ratios are the same). For a 02 with a v10 and 3:73, towing max = 9,600 and with 4:30, towing max = 11,000 (the same for the diesel with the 4:30). Concerning fuel mileage - that's all matter of how you drive. For end of life value - you're right they have a higher resale, and if I were buying a new one, that would be a big consideration. But since I'm looking at '01 - '03, I don't really see it - must vehicles have taken their greatest depreciation by the time they are 3 years old.
I too have been in the market for an Excursion. A PSD EB 4x4 is not easy to find, especially for a decent price.. Found a couple but they wanted 50,000+.. Some have said they are bringing top dollar, even several thousand above high retail value since production ended.Seems like it too.. Of course i only want one with low mileage and absolutely mint condition 05 model. Ya'll run across a good one send me a PM.My babied,Mint condition 02F350 SRW 7.3 will be for sale when i find the right Excursion..
I'm loving this truck so far - I'm really surprised at how manueverable it is in parking lots. I've found it more maneverable than my F150 was.
I do have one puzzeling question though - what is the little hooky thing for on the lower half of the dash? I've noticed it on all Ford SDs, but I really don't know what it's for - does anybody? That hooky thing - just below and to the right of the cigar lighter... what is it?
