rust proofing frame

hey guys i want to clean up and rust proof my frame. i started to clean it up with a wire wheel on a grinder but i am not sure about my next step. i am thinking about treating the frame with oshpo and then brushing on zero rust. my questions are do i need the oshpo with the zero rust? would you guys recamend the aresol cans of zr or the regular brush on stuff. is there anywhere i can get this stuff besides ordering it from there web site. also how much will i need to do 2 coats on the whole frame.

I'd sandblast if possible. (There are sandblasting attachments for pressure-washers, if you don't have access to a big air compressor). Wirebrushes don't seem to take off the hard rust, or get into pits. Ospho will remove rust, but it'll be a slow job to do an entire frame unless you can dip it.
Brush-on should be cheaper, and go on thicker, and be less wasteful. But any tough air/waterproof paint might be as effective.
How about getting a quote on having the frame sandblasted and powder-coated or sprayed with a catalyzed paint like Imron, from some place that does big-truck and heavy equipment painting? They can sandblast it in a jiffy with a monster blaster and compressor, and they buy paint in bulk a lot cheaper than you can, so the cost may not be as bad as you think.

My dad and I have been POR-15'ing our truck from front to back recently to rust proof it. Check that out, it's pretty cheap, easy, and available just about anywhere. -myers

I don't recommend POS-15. I live in a desert, and put that stuff on, and the things I did with it are rusting. I have painted with rustoleum for years, and it holds up better. Maybe it is because it is thicker? Anyway, I would say wire or sandblast the best you can, use naval jelly, and BRUSH rustoleum on, starting with the red metal primer.

Maybe the stuff im putting on isn't POR-15 then, this stuff is like a thick TAR, everything that has been painted over since november hasn't rusted, and that's even after a BAD winter with lots of driving on the trucks part. Granted thats only about 9-10 months ago.... but so far so good.

Crazy thing about this stuff though is that it doesn't harden, it remains tacky of sorts. It's next to impossible to get off though, I got some on one of our seat covers and couldn't get it out for the life of me.

I think though for the rear of the truck im going to grind, sand, etc put a layer of rustoleum primer down, paint, then this POR-15 stuff. Complete over kill... you bet... but winters here are terrible and stuff rusts REALLY fast. My dad did some body work on the bed (it's been awhile for him) basicaly sanded, bondo'd, primed and painted, within a month it had started to rust agian.

Im convinced that PREP work is the key, if you prep it really well, you should do fine with either.

Lol... local redneck speaking here, but I used roofing tar for a frame on my 77. Thinned it down some with gasoline and sprayed it using an undercoat/bedliner spray gun. Looks awesome and the big plus is that it's only $6 or so a gallon! Also if it ever scratches off anywhere I can just brush some more on in that place.
