engine sizes for '65

Hello dudes, I'm still waiting for the '65 250. Hopefully first week of June (me and the boy can call her ours).
To help ease the time, I've ordered a shop manual.

I dont know what size engine it has? I've assumed it was 289cu in.
And when looking up part #,s for an oil filter, I didnt see 289 listed.
All i remember is 240 & 300 sixes,352,361 & 391 v8s.

And also ... Ive seen some ads for upgrading distributors
for breakerless,pointless.. like modern trucks.
Wouldnt this take away from stock value? Or would its benefits
out way the old system? I wont be using it as a daily driver so
miles wont be high.

Brakes? Does this truck have a single chamber master cylinder?
What year did the go to dual?

Well now I'm just rambling.

thanks in advance

The 289 V8 is a disputed point. I have many truck books, one does say it was an option, the rest do not list it. I'm inclined to believe it was NOT an option in our trucks and that the one lone book was a misprint or the writer was talking about the 292, which was not in the 65-66s anyway. The old style ignition works just fine and is very reliable if adjusted right. There are universal kits to convert to electronic. If you really want to go there, check out J.C. Whitney, should be a web site for them. The value aspect is probally not that important. These trucks will never be corvettes or mustangs, the correctness of the ignition becomes more a personal choice. Just save all the old parts and don't do anything that can't be swapped back, if the next owner wants to do it.
The dual master cylinder started in 1967 for Ford trucks. Hope some of this helps...

Cheese and Rice: Ranger66 is on the money. The 289 WAS available, as opposed to being OFFERED, but one had to special order it, and the FE was nearing the height of it's glory, so most went with that. Chevy didn't offer a truck engine like Ford did. Most chose what was readily offered in the FE or FT line. If you will post the VIN and warranty plate info, we can get you more details. I"m sure your shop manual will get you most of the info, but sometimes they don't cover all the little points one wants to know.

Tim, You could get a 240 or 300 I6, or a 352 V8 in your truck in 65 and that's about it.

The Pertronix Ignniter is highly thought of as an upgrade for your ign. I just had one along with their coil delivered this week for $90.00 for both. The only stock value that you have to be concerned about is in a few auto showes in the country, and for then you just drop the points back in if it's a concern. A well tuned point system works just fine. Some of us just have to have GOODIES on our trucks.
The dual mastercylinders came with power brakes. I converted my 66 to power disc by installing 76 I-beams as well as the power steering.

You don't know yet how much driving you will do until after you bring her home. It may be just like a good woman, take it out for a spin and you fall in love, because she's fun to drive. I found mine 35 years ago, only had the trucks about 5 years.

Tim: FT = Ford Truck engine family (361, 391 are the most common, not usually found in the 100 - 250 series, occasionally in 350, often in the 500 series and above, busses, gas dump trucks and the like.)
FE = Ford Edsel, starting in 1957/58 with the 332 and 352, (Includes the 360, 390, 406, 410, 428 and 427.) Used in cars and light trucks, but some of the truck (and some car ) motors had extra main support webbing (or not), beefier cylinder walls (or not), etc.
In my 'net surfing, I've found a lot of info. Here are he links I've got.
Check out this link on FE engines.

here's another link to Ford Engines. It's the Ford Muscle Story magazine all scanned out. Nice! It discusses the different engine families.

Its coming from Minnesota, about 40 miles from me.
Its some shade of green.
I first saw it about 5 years ago and have been drooling since.
Shes real clean and has about 50,000 miles. It was a farmers
truck that was hardly used.
?
It has no rear bumper. Did rear bumpers come as an option?
Thanks, Tim

If its the odd shade of green I am thinking of, its not too bad all prettied up. Its not a dark grn, but not a lime grn either...I cant recall the colors name.
As for rear bumps, thats a timeless question....I have seen so many different types of rear bumps it is mind boggling. The only bumper I recall as appearing to have been factory installed is the chrome non-step bumper...correct me if I am wrong as to those being factory installed. Most step bumps I would venture are dealer installed.
50K truck...you got lucky...hope its rust and rot free....sometimes it hides really good....When you get the beast home, post a couple pics....I am curious as to when the Camper special pkg was introduced....mine is a mid June 65 rig as I recall the build date approximation is based upon the last 6 digits...

Good Luck and Happy Truckin!!!
