K&N worth the money on a 98 4.6

I've also debated this and I have the same year and size motor, but what I read a CAI doesn't do much without exhaust and a tune other then noise. I'm sure that the 14 Hp increase K&N states isn't true. Also I decided to stick with stock because of the oiling the filter and the possibilty of getting mud on the filter when off roading. AEM offers a CAI that has a dry filter and looks good if any interest to you. It's called Brute Force

I have a 98 4.6L and put a drop-in K&N filter in the stock box. I could tell a little difference. I guess it was worth the $30 I paid for it off of ebay.
I will not get the FIPK because of the off-roading issues, I don't know if they are worth the money for the increase in hp or not on these trucks, I'm sure they are. The one I bought for my mustang certainly did and that was on a 4.6L '03 GT. I think Volant makes an enclosed kit with a plexiglass shield for looks. They are $$$ though.

I think if not for power its worth it just because your not buying a paper $14.00 every time. After the purchase of the filter you might have to purchase a $14.00 recharge kit maybe every 5th or 6th cleaning. You may not want K&N but any life long reuseable filter is worth the money. Just my 2 cents.

this is some interesting reading. as the guy says, you need to make up your own mind what is "good" or "best" for you. my opinion is the more dirt you keep out of your motor, the better. "less restriction" may help at 5000 RPM, but running down the road at 1750 RPM you wont see any difference.

Save your money, and engine, stay with the OEM paper filter.....

Not tring to be a big shot or a know-it-all, but you cant just clean them once a year or over oil them and expect good results. It takes some initiative and a little work for them to give ya good long service. Some of these other situations your talking about may be contributed to lack of cleaning or too much oil, just simply trying to pull somthing out of a box with great rewards and no responsibility. As much as this generation will try its not gona happen.
