Stick Shift **** Removal

Does anyone know how to remove the **** off the stick shift? I want to replace it with a wood one I am making. I want to keep the original and don't want to destroy it.

on our '95 with the ZF5, it's splined on the end of the stick. then the **** just slides on and is probably held with just glue. try tapping upwards at the bottom ledge of the **** at the end of the stick. or a few firm tugs upwards on the **** while someone holds down the rest of the assembly and it should pop off.

Yup. Same on my 2000. I was able to grab the **** and rotate it to break it free. You'll have to post some pics of the wood one once you get it installed.

Well, I was shifting too hard and fast and mine just sort of popped off but I wouldn't recommend that.

The correct way is to use an open ended wrench the size of the shaft and smaller then the ****. Put the wrench under the **** and hit upwards gently with a hammer and it should break the hold and pop right off without much fuss at all. No damage to anything.

Same thing w/ mine; I'd like to know how to make mine STAY ON! The first time it came off was a really hot day, so a careful application of heat may help you.

I finally got the **** off. It was on there really good and half way destroyed the stock ****. I turned the new one on my lathe. The wood is called zebra wood. I then drilled a 5/8 hole for 1 inch and a 1/2 hole for another 1 1/2 inches. I then pounded it on with a mallet.

lugnut, mine came off my 5 speed in my 1992 F150. I went to the hardware store and picked up an allen head set screw. I just guessed on the size, not too small, but not too large either. I drilled a hole near the base of the **** and threaded the hole with a tap to match the set screw threads. Put your **** over the stick and push on (lining up the splines, of course). Screw the set screw down with allen wrench until it touched the stick itself and then give just a little extra. Not too tight, those ***** are only plastic which means the threads aren't the strongest, but mine stayed on well and never came off again. If you drill your hole towards the back of the **** (faces dash), no one will ever see it. I willing to bet it was better than glue.

Yeah, it worked for me. Hope it does for you too. No reason why it shouldn't. I was always apprehensive that those plastic threads wouldn't hold, but it never moved. Just tighten that set screw down comfortably, don't crank it. Heck, you could use glue in addition to the set screw, that should hold her on.

BTW tazo, that is a nice lookin' shifter **** you made!

That is a sweet ****. I drilled and tapped the lever and put a brass button head screw in to hold mine on. It got to the point where it would just slide on and off.
