DeiselKleen storage

I happened to go through the camping section of WalMart today and saw some aluminum bottles. They were about 3.50 each. I thought they would make an excellent container for fuel supplement (no matter what brand).

They are 600ml, which is about 20 oz. Bought a few and think they will work great. Figure I'll fill them to about 2 inches of the top and should give me close to 16oz which will give me a plus 6 cetane boost for my 29 gallon tank. I don't believe there is is as much danger of them leaking as the coke bottles I have been using.

Thought I would share....for what it is worth. SamsClub might even have them cheaper, but figured for what I paid for my truck, 10 bucks or so wasn't much.

I will be marking them very prominently so my kids (or me) don't mistake them for anything other than what they are.

how big is the neck on those bottles? Reason I ask ..is I was hunting around for a small container as well but wanted something with a wide neck so I don't have to use a funnel or get it all over my hands when I'm filling it up.

You may already have thought of this but if you add 16 ozs. at each fill-up, after a while you're going to end up with a pretty high concentration of Diesel Kleen. If you fill up with 20 gallons, you still have 7 gallons of treated fuel. If you fill up the next time with 20 gallons, that 7 gallons in the tank is even more concentrated. It will go on and on. I don't know if it's even a problem but you may want to run an un-treated tank full ever so often to dilute it back down. If you run it down to the Low Fuel alarm each time, I guess it's not an issue.

BearHunter,

The opening is about the same as a coke bottle, maybe a little bit larger, but not much. I thought of that too, but figured I can deal with it, especially since I have been dealing with coke bottles up to now.

Bud,
True. But according to what I have been told, and read, you cannot 'over treat'. More than likely I will end up adding closer to 12oz per fill (since I am only filling 'by sight'), which will reduce, but not eliminate the situation you describe.

Also, it does in fact seem that every so often (maybe every 3rd tank or so), I find that I don't have any treatment in the truck when it is time to fill up.

Thanks for the thoughts/advice

STOP.... what you want is below!!!

http://www.msrcorp.com/stoves/bottles.asp

You need bottles that are designed to carry fuel and have a gasket sealed top that is fuel proof. I use the 32oz (large bottle) and refill it from the 1 gallon jugs of Powerservice I buy at my local truckstop.

Depending on what concentration you want, you either add 1/2 to 1 full bottle depending on tank size and how low on fuel you are.

Again, do not just use any ol' metal or aluminum bottle... use the MSR brand (available at quality camping stores or REI.com). They will not leak, or com delaminated or other horrible things.... buy quality and sleep well.

P.S. - Nothing worse than leaking additives in your truck... you will never get 100% of the smell out if an inferior bottle leaks!!! I carry 2 bottles with me at all times for trips. SInce I have a 44 gallon tank in my Excursion, I need more than ther standard pick-up truck tank holds or uses.

Good luck,

Jeff

Jeff,
I have always been a advocate of buying quality products (just ask my wife...).

However, unfortunatley, I have pretty much decided we live in a 'non quality' world now.

I still have some MSR bottles that I use for camp fuel. I looked closely at the bottles I bought today, both before buying and after. I see no difference. MSR bottles

I keep my fuel additive in ziplock bags, stored behind the seat, so I don't worry too much about leaking bottles, but I will sleep better with the additive in an aluminum bottle rather than a plastic coke bottle.
