Tire Report

Just thought I'd write up an opinion post regarding the new tires and rims on the truck. I've had them on now for about a week and actually drove the truck around too!! A few observations regarding the tires on this first couple of rides, they are noisier than the Toyos, but different style of tire! And to be totally honest I enjoy the hum/growl they produce as you accelerate! Instead of using the stick-on weights, I grudgingly decided to use the internall BBs. 8oz of airsoft BBs from Walmart in each tire, quite surprinsingly it worked! I've read numerous posts where people used similar products with positive results, no premature wear on the inside of the tires or wheels either. Since these tires (36x1250x16.5 Goodyear Military Oz) are bias ply they do flat spot! But 15 or so minutes of driving and they round back out nicely and actually give a smooth ride. Winter time out here would be a problem, but the Toyo radials on the steel wheels will go back on. Most importantly from a male ego point of view, the looks, cars and trucks slowing down and taking a good long look at the truck is priceless! Next test is coming up on the weekend, going to hook up the travel trailer, see if I have to lower the hitch head, and do a test tow to see how the taller tires handle the load. Looking forward to it! With the 410s I don't anticipate too much problem, but we'll see. There is a definite difference in the final gearing with the taller tires though, that was evident the first time out! Need to be sure it'll work as we're heading to North Dakota for a week stay at the State Park down there.

Great to hear they are working out for you. When I worked at the tire shop, we had to use those balacing beads (or whatever they are called, i forget) on quite a few different kinds of larger off road tires.

Towing is the main thing I'm interested in, I know larger tires makes towing a little more interesting.

Well got the trailer hooked up and out on a test tow. Had a couple of issues to handle first, one of the tires had a leak, was dropping a pound or 2 per day. Brought it over to Sturgeon Tire and they traced it to a plug in the tire that was leaking! So that was fixed, hooked up to the trailer after that and the electrics weren't connecting, so tracked down the problem to the plastic wire splicers that was used when the trailer wiring was installed on the truck, a little cutting and solder and got the connections solid. Got the trailer hooked, connected and out on the road to see how it sat. Actually sits level with the new tires, surprising! So no adjusting of the hitch head was necessary. With granny low on the tranny, the truck idles away from stopped and accelerates nicely into 2nd and 3rd, or 3rd and 4th depending on which way you look at it. Acceleration onto the highway doesn't show much change at all, gets up to 90-100k nicely and holds the speed well. Couple of hills over the offramps and the loss of speed wasn't much more than with the smaller tires, some extra gas and the speed held nicely. I did notice a little sway with the wind, but with the taller sidewalls, it's to be expected. Certainly nothing to be concerned about. All in all, a successful trial. I don't think there will be any problems towing when we head South! Now to find something else to worry about!!

That thing must have all sorts of power, is that mileage figured out in "canadian" gallons? If thats american then thats about 14 mpg canadian which isnt bad.

Good to hear that your happy with those tires, and havent had problems with them

Also go for the cummins swap! You will be one happy man having a diesel like that in there

Canadian gallons, although at 14 using the American, that doesn't sound as bad!!!
