Hello Everybody
after much debate and mental anguish, I have decided to keep the stock radio in my dash, I had first planned on putting a cd player in the dash. Now my question is has any one seen a fiberglass overhead consule for the 65-66 pickup. I have seen them for the 67-72, but are they avalible for the earlier ones or will the 67-72 fit Thanks for any and all help Eric
Good choice on keeping the stock radio! Once you cut your dash, there is no going back! I have not heard of an overhead console for the 61-66 trucks. If you make one, you may find there isn't much to attach it to, just some slim bracing. Just a thought, the 56-59 Dodge trucks had their optional factory radio mounted in a case that was mounted on the front edge of the interior roof.Maybe this case, if you can find one, could be adapted for your radio. On my truck, I just built a console from dash to floor to hold a newer radio & a pair of cup holders and covered it in vinyl to match the seats..
I probably will end up going with a center consule and put the deck in that but I was just wondering about other options. The overhead consule, was just an idea I was kicking around and it can't hurt to get other peoples input Thanks Eric
I put mine in the a center console from Steel Horse (Ultimate Locking Console) then went to the local radio dealer and purcased an underdase mini-console and bolted it into the inside of the console. Looks and works great.
Note that even if you wanted to put an aftermarket radio in the truck, the available depth is around 5-1/2 inches and prevents you from installing most standard chassis radios in the dash.
ps - note your antenna length before your trip to the stereo shop to make sure you don't need an extension for the antenna wire
Great idea to keep the stock radio, but if you want to upgrade even furthur, try the 73-77 bronco radio. They are transistorized and give better service. If you put your original ***** on it, you will never know the difference. They fit the same stock holes and you can always sell your original tube type. Food for thought. See-ya
You want a console huh? Well here you go.....

After many requests RodDoors finally introduces its version of an overhead console. Made of A.B.S. plastic, this console can be easily trimmed to fit the roof contours of any truck, rod, or classic. The faceplate is designed to fit standard DIN mount Radios, but is large enough for air ride gauges, switches, 2-1/8" gauges or cut out the opening as an extra storage area. The large rear area is ideal for a courtesy light or more power window switches. Console can be upholstered, or painted with standard vinyl dye to match the interior of any classy ride.
