I know I can use an electronic ignition from a 318 with some modifications to fit in my 52 255 flathead, is there a prefered year I should be looking for at the local wrecking yard. Also if someone has some good detailed info I would be interested.
I can't help with that conversion but I believe Pertronix makes an advance plate setup for the flathead distributor. They aren't very expensive but they are highly reliable. Rotsa ruck.
70's thru mid 80's 318/360. I used one from an 85 Dodge 1T van; the larger series were often exempt from all the funny stuff. Be sure it is the basic distributor with only one pickup, there are different versions depending on state, EPA crap, etc. You do not want a Lean Burn either.
On vans and pickups the type is usually on the under hood decal listing tuneup specs.
86 was when many 318/360's switched to the computer and the dizzy is different.
Absolutely bullet proof, cant say that for Pertronix, etc. Get the harness, coil & resistor, and module. Some used a 2 step resistor, more voltage to the coil for starting; use the higher resistance connections.
I had a machinist friend do the conversion per Mike Davidsons book, then had it recurved for a hot 276 flathead. Dyno runs HP were still climbing at 5500. rpm!
