Diagnostic code p1299 (CHT protection)

I now have a check engine soon display. The diagnostic code was p1299 (cylinder head overtemperature protection active) what do I need to do and can I fix this myself? The truck tends to run on the warm side and the other day I was pulling a 16 ft trailor and the truck temp pegged out hot at one point. I dont understand why it is running hot. It has water, oil, and the trailor was empty. Any advice will be appreciated.

Fix the hot-running condition. Coolant level, radiator cap, thermostat are all good things to keep in mind.
