That's what I've heard of doing before. So which is it? Does a 2001 Expy have the TC drain or no? I forget which tranny I have, but I know it's the most common one for the 4.6L.
You may or may not, your just gonna have to look and see. BTW, you need to check and see what type of tranny you have. If you have the 4R70W, you added the wrong fluid to it. if you have the 4R100 then your ok.
To tell, look at the door jamb on the drivers side and see what the tranny code is.
Tranny code "U" = 4R70W = MerconV
Tranny code "E" = 4R100 = Mercon<!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in -->
What is a flush. I had it done last service . Do they change the filter or do they just open a line and drain it that way
Just open a line and pump the old fluid out while sucking new fluid in. they do not change the filter. The flush is suppossed to remove the debris from the filter, so says Ford, others will argue that.

Well now I know I have the 4R70W, but I can't remember if I put the MerconV in it or not. I've got some extra bottles left over though. I'll check when I get home. Thanks!
comming off the tranny are two lines that go to a Cooler or the radiator. One of these lines pumps tranny fluid out while the other sucks it back in. Not sure what line does what but i am sure a search can tell you.

It's the top line in the 4r70W tranny.
Easy to find by just popping the hood of your truck and look at the line going into the top of the driver's side of the radiator. Right in front of your air filter.
At least that's how it is in my 2001.
You'll definitely want a nice snug hose clamp and the end of your clear plastic tubing needs to be wide enough around to fit the end of the transmission line (It's wider than the line itself).

Well guess who got to flush his transmission last night?
That's right, I had put Mercon III into my 4R70W. That freaked me out, so I spent the cash and bought a case of the Mercon V yesterday (Castrol brand). I was happy with the color of the fluid that I pumped out, and I have a little more peace of mind about my 130K mile tranny.
Question:
Assuming I replaced everything in the pan, and I haven't ever drained the TC, am I safe now?
And what about the TC? Should I drain that at some point? Does it share fluid w/the tranny or are they separate? If they don't share fluid, how do you refill the TC once it's drained?
The fluid is pumped around between the trans and the converter. There is no separate fill for the converter. One of the reasons when you do a drain and fill you should drive it around getting it up to temp and cycle the trans through all the gear selections before checking the fluid level.
I would still do a full flush sometime soon. Before, you only replaced about 1/3 of the tranny fluid with new fluid since you did not drain the TC. The new fluid was the wrong fluid. You just recently replaced 1/3 of the tranny fluid with the right fluid. So you still have 2/3 bad / wrong fluid running through the tranny. Just flush it soon with the right stuff, then you can have peace of mind.
Are the tranny flush services you find now at most shops worth it versus the old approach of dropping the pan and replacing the fluid and installing a new screen/filter? Are they just cleaning and recyling the old fluid they take out? A lot of franchise repair shops seem to hype the flush approach, which makes me even more suspicious!?!
