Just a quick question, any ideas (roughly) on the costs of a Power Steering Gear Box, Pump, Hoses, and Steer Shaft from a Junk Yard for..say, a 1974 F250??? Just looking to see what prices I should expect, so i dont get jipped!
Thanks
Well I can say that the bone yard will cut the hoses unless they do something under the table. They "have to" by law cut the hoses. Atleast that is what I am told. I would guess the box and pump would run you $50.00 roughly. That's what I was qouted down here in New Orleans.
Thanks....Iam hoping to spend under $100.00 for a working gearbox, pump, bracket, and possibly steering shaft. If anyone has these parts (that'll fit a '65 f250, 390) please email me, as I would be willing buy over the internet.
You would be a great deal ahead if you bought a parts truck with a wasted body and got all your parts. You can easily see how it all goes together, you may even want to swap the I-beams if you find one with disc brakes.
I think 50.00 is way low for a pump, steering gear and the shorter column. On the other hand I have seen trucks sell for 50.00 that had all that and more. So shop around to find the deals. If you have a place to park it, a parts truck really makes good sense. Ball park figure in my area would be over 300.00 for the pump, brackets, cooler, gear, column and new hoses and drive belt. Add 60.00 for a new plastic rag joint and 75.00 for a new TS switch and you can see costs get out of hand quickly. If you core the pump and gear add another 200.00. Of course this permanently solves the problem.

I just got a 71 Ranger from a junk yard and paid $600 for the whole thing to up grade my 66 f-100. If you are going to up grade to power steering you will need the steering colum, gear box, pump and hoses. The problem I had was the donor steering colum is an automatic and I have a 3 on the tree. The good thing is the donor truck has a 390 engine with a c6 automatic trans and disk brakes. Now I can sell my old engine and trans and make my money back. I loved the 66 when it was all original but now that that I have power steering and brakes with a 390 engine and auto trans what a great ride. Good part is all it cost me was time. good luck with your truck.
the coulumn from a 69-72 will fit nicely in the sixty five, but keep in mind that you have to pretty much get all the mounting hardware with the column because the mounting plates and such are not the same. I did the conversion on a 66 f-250 a few years ago that also included changing out the front I beams in faveor og the dual piston disc brake front end. A very nice conversion and the stopping distance was less than half oif the old drum setup.
