I looking for some info on beefing up my 390. I have a 390 that came out of a 73 ford pickup. It is going in my 66 with a C6 trans. As of now it is stock with a 2brl carb. I want to put a 4brl carb and intake on it. Is there any thing else I should do to the engine, trans and rearend? What I want is a cruse speed of 70 mph on the high way and something that will put me back in my seat off the line and put a chevy to shame!! Looking for the right combo.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jun-02 AT 02:25 PM (EST)]You already have two things that put a chevy to shame.
1) A 390
2) A Ford!
Now for the good stuff. When I bought my truck it would set you back a little. Now it will definitely set you back. It's fun to watch the front end of the 65 Torque to the right on a good take off.....
This is how my truck was set up, and how it is set up now.
Before: 390, 500 CFM Holley 2 barrel carb, stock cam, stock cast iron intake, stock manifolds, restrictive (crackhead) exhaust. (the exhaust started out as 2.25 at the manifolds, necked up to 2.5 between the manifolds & the turbo mufflers, and then necked down to 2 inch at the mufflers. With a set of dual 2 inch tailpipes 45'd in front of the rear tires.
After: Same 390, Edelbrock performer rpm intake, Holley 600 carb, pertronix electronic ignition, K&N Air filter, new dual exhaust (consisting of, 2.5" pipe, a crossover of 2.5" pipe, dual 40 series Flowmasters, and 3.5"x22" polished stainless exhaust tips.
I forgot to add, that mine has either 3.70 or 3.73 gears in the rear end. I can run 70 mph all day long, and cruise 55 at 2300 rpm.
It sounds so sweet, it'll be even better when I get my headers ordered. I do finally have pictures of my engie up in my gallery if anybody wants to take a look.....
That's what I have been told was in this rear end. If that's wrong then please let me know what gear ratio that sounds like, with the C6. But I do know that I am running 2300-2400 at 55.
Mark: If you can squirt me the info from your warranty tag, I can tell you what is in that rear - assuming both the tag and rear are original to the truck. Another possibility is the information off the data tag bolted to the rear pumpkin.
Kyle, Take it in the firehouse and mark the tire and have one of the guys push it one tire revolution, while you count the revs of the driveshaft. Someone suggested taping a piece of string to the ds and count the winds of one tire rev. Give it a try and post back.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I've already tried that method. We came up with 1.75 turns on the DS, doesn't make any sense to anybody around here, maybe you can make something out of it.....
Kile, You rolled the truck forward one tire revolution and only got 1 3/4 ds revolution?? Yall need to do that before you get into the beer.

That was with the truck up in the air, with both rear wheels off the ground, and I turned both wheels to see if the numbers would change. No change. Still got a 1.75, unless I've got some kind of experimental rear-end from Ford......
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jun-02 AT 10:44 AM (EST)]You have to turn both wheels ar the same rate at the same time other wise you get an error caused by the spider gears in the diff.
I ran some number in my racing spread sheet. 55mph with 1 to 1 trany and 3.73 rear gear is possible with 30 inch diameter tire.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jun-02 AT 12:16 PM (EST)]Well C6 is 1 to 1 in high gear and a 255-60-15 tire should be 27.05 inches in Diameter so if you have 3.73's that works out to 2548 rpm's at 55 mph if you've got 3.55 rear gears you've got 2425 rpm's at 55 mph.
Oh ya you said also 70 mph so that works out to.
3087 rpm with 3.55 or
3242 rpms with 3.73
