I have 6 lug split rims on a F350 and I want to replace them with new style wheels so that I can use radial style tires - OR I would like to know how to convert over to 8 lug wheels. Is this as easy as changing the front spacers OR drums?
Are you sure they are 6 lug ????? Only ones i have seen on F 250 and F 350 are 16 x 5 x 8 lug on 6.5 centers..I think anything 16 x 8 lug on 6.5 centers up to 1994 will fit 8 lug pattern on older F-250-350
Yes I am sure that they are 6 lug dual wheels (dished out front rims)
I would like to use the 8 lug wheels is this as easy as changing the front spacers or would i have to change the drums too.
Welcome to the world of "oddball" truck parts. I have the same problem on my '65 F-350 dually. There is NO simple way to put 8 lug rims on the front of your truck. Even Stockton Wheel can't or won't make them (their dually centers aren't offset enough or strong enough, or some such reason). I even asked if they could sell me their standard 8-lug dually rims but drilled on a 6-lug pattern but they apparently outsource these and can't special order a small quantity.
Extensive machine work on later model hubs would be required (seems like the bearing diameters and spacings are never the same). I took a pair 8-lug rims to the machine shop and had them weld six of the holes shut and then redrill on the six lug pattern. Not cheap but it works. I still carry a split rim with a tire/tube on it for a front spare, tossed in the bed. (The rear was easy, just swapped for a slightly later model Dana 70 with 8 lugs).
Of course it might be possible to put an F-Superduty solid front axle under your truck, with the disk brakes which would be a BIG help stopping these beasts. Not a bolt-in though, when I looked under an '80'something Superduty.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Jun-02 AT 11:35 PM (EST)]Thanks for the info I will try to get some stuff togther for the winter project. Is your truck finished --- well no truck is ever finished -- would you send me some pictures of what you have done? Tis may help me plan my project. I'm new to the Truck thing, Iam a Mustang guy. merkthom4100(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
