From the information that I have gathered,( local experts) the failure can begin with vibration or a spring could break and tear some stuff up. My clutch just chattered real bad when engaging.
The Haynes manual says that chattering is caused by failing pressure plate / throw out bearing. If neither one of those it says check other parts. Haynes says nothing about dual mass clutches. I think the members of this forum have much more information than the Haynes manual.
By the way we bolted the new flywheel and clutch in tonight. Tommorow night the starter, drive shaft and slave. Does anyone know what fluid the zf takes ?
nope: i have a 92 f-450 with a drum brake on the end and it takes automatic and they are prone to leak between compartments and starve the rear unit of oil and burn up so watchout if you gave one of these. Plus i have 200,000 miles on a rebuilt transmission that hauls 13k pounds day and night. i do road service on big trucks and fleet maintenance. transmission guy that built the trans said use nothing but dextron no additives or anything, just change it 1 a year under heavy pulling. also make sure your breather vent on top of trans is clear and clean . this will start a problem quick. i have and that's been 9 years now! i will say this if you have to rebuild your trans fix it right the first time it is well worth the money i the long run. always replace 3rd and 5th gear syncronizers and gears i don't care what the look like period.
The luk is installed, the pedal assembly is in and adjusted correctly. Its a pain to remove the adjustment arm on the pedal assembly but it was the only way to get the thing to pump up.
Bled the slave. I was a real pain. I still stink like brake fluid. Works great. Thanks for all the good advice.
Hello, (Newbie here) I have a 1990 F350 w/ 7.3 idi and a turbo. I think that my DMF may be going out but I dunno. there is a bad vibration when I let off the gas to slow down, while backing up, or when I turn the steering wheel to the left when at idling in N or sometimes while driving. Does this sound like it is the dmf? If not does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?
Everything but turning left could be the vibration from a failing dmf. My truck chattered real bad in reverse. You should be able to remove the flywheel cover and see if your rear main seal is leaking. If its not dripping oil out of the rear seal it could very well be the dmf. Dave had a test of like 5/8 " of play in the clutch to determine if it was failing.
I already had mine off the truck before I was informed. I was quite sure that the dmf was failing from what I read in this forum and since replacing it with a smf I have been very pleased. No Chattering in reverse now ! luk works great !!!
MF
The 5/8" free play is in rotation of the flywheel.
Since the dual mass is a two piece flywheel, with the truck in neutral and the inspection cover removed, when you have 5/8" movement of the ring gear by hand the dual mass is failing.
