400-550 on an idi IS way easy to reach. mine has 400+ and i get 20 mpg average on the freeway 25 if i baby it.

I would definatly sacrafice handling for torque and mpgs. That is the most optimstic thing I have heard in a few years.

I think I better get a 6.9 and squeeze it in there, cut out the inner fenders, get thicker springs as needed. I was looking at a turbo off a power stroke, halman boost control valve, DPS stage 2 or 3 pump, block heater, 2nd block heater in the intake to aid in cold starts.

the IDI will fit your bronco no doubts. My uncle had one with a 429 in it...and theres a guy running a 300-6 in an 85 ranger on cardomain (similar sized engine bays)....you might need to do a front mount pusher fan and get some custom mounts to set the engine back, a body lift will help that too.
