I need to install an engine oil cooler on my 1992 F-150 5.0 to set it up to pull my camper. Does anyone know where I can find this kit. I looked at summit and their kits are for Chevy V8's. I would have to buy the peices seperate. Thanks in advance. Ryan
FWIW, I used to run sandrails (based on punched out VW engines). Just like chevys they sell alot of "stuff" for VW supposed to help with getting ponies and improving this or yada yada yada and MOST of it was snake oil. If you want to run cooler oil-increase the volume of oil with a bigger pan. MANY of the aftermarket radiators don't do very much to drop the oil temp, unless you pony up for the coolers like they use in NASCAR.
One other thing-if you have chrome on your engine-it keeps the heat in.
Sure do miss those days of two big rooster tails coming from the paddles, front wheels just off the ground, slamming third half way up the hill at 55 MPH and the passenger pXXXXX their pants.heh heh heh
While a larger pan would help....an oil cooler does work and they work well.
Put a gauge on it if you really want to know the difference, but typically...it's about a 70 degree drop in oil temp, but it depends/varies.
I asked on another forum about an oil cooler for my 393, and many users reported their findings and a few posted such things as "was 290 now 210-220*) etc....
I installed the "Ford Racing" kit from Summit on my 89 5.0 AOD for towing a 24' pontoon boat. Before the cooler was on the temp guage installed in the oil pan was reading about 230. After the cooler it hardly goes above 195. The kit was about 125 if I remember right.
The forum I asked on was a mustang forum and mustangs will probably have a higher temp because of the tighter engine compartment. The trucks have much larger engine compartments and much better airflow in and out of it...so the cooler temps are probably from that.
