94 dual tank diff/same pump?

I have a 94 I6 4.9 with dual tanks, the front pump is non functioning, and I will be replacing it soon (taking gas from front and putting into the rear) my main question is are both pumps identical? or are they different? I believe The truck is Y coded, with steel tanks.

no the pumps in the tanks are not the same. the front tank is deeper and the rear is shallow.put a new pump in front tank this should stop the fuel transfer problem should be a 18 gallon steel tank called the mid ship tank

Does the fuel pump in the front tank work? The rear fuel delivery module is responsible for allowing the fuel into the rear tank from the front, due to a bad check valve, so it should be the one you replace.

Our trucks use a fuel pump module...the actual motor/pump is inside the module. People just refer to the module as the pump or pump assembly...

If your front fuel pump died...you could take the motor/pump from the rear module and put it in the front module. The front module has the pickup in the right spot for the style of tank. So you need to use the front module in the front, but you can use the rear pump inside the front module.

So if you want, you could take apart the rear pump and swipe the motor for the front pump...then buy a new rear module/pump assembly and be good to go.

Red face my apologies

Sorry about that in the post. I meant to say that I am taking gas from the front tank (which is full) manually and putting it into the rear tank (the one that works) so that i can empty the front tank to be able to drop the tank for pump replacement.

Second part of this is, when I am looking for a new pump is there a specific way to look for the front pump, autozone doesn't have the option to pick a different one (front or rear option) just a fuel pump for my year truck. where would I find out if my truck is Y coded or Z coded?

thanks for all the help guys.

Anyone in here have ideas for exhaust on my truck to sound decent with the I6? I was thinking of looking for a header and most likely custom 3" exhaust pipe. good idea/bad idea?

Check out the exhaust forum for exhaust related questions (plz make new threads for new separate topics). If you havn't already, please view the "Read First!" thread at the top of this forum, it explains what questions belong in this forum and what belongs the other forums...

I just looked up pumps through autozone and they asked for either rear tank, plastic tank, or mid-ship (front) tank.

You can try their website to see if you can get through to the part #.

Hey, Welcome here. I know your 94 is a bit different than my 90, but I filled my Front and ran off the rear, which crossflowed into overfilling the front tank once. When this happened, I could not get the truck to start or run from the front tank, after taking about 4 gallons out of the tank I was able to run from the front tank. Apparently there is a problem with my front pump when the tank is full ... I kept trying it every gallon or so. Yours may be the same.
