Blinking headlights

I was driving my 1966 f100 last night and found that if I rode for 15-20 minutes with the high beams on, the headlights would flash on and off. They were not flickering like a wire was loose, but they would begin to flash on and off in a constant pattern. I turned off the high beams and ran low beams for a while and then put the high beams on again...the same thing would happen. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this and what the fix would be?

Thanks,
Farrell

Farrel: The headlight circuit is supposed to have a circuit breaker to prevent electical fires. I can't remember if it's in the headlight witch itself or in the fusebox.
Sounds, though, like you have a electrical short or grounding problem in the wiring for the lights.

It sounds like that circuit breaker is getting hot with the added current of the high beams like John said.
If they were alernating left and right or something, I would say it could be some sort of emergency vehicle device. But I doubt it.

Farrell, Change out the dimmer switch. That isn't the only culpret, but can be the cause of this. It isn't costly to replace either. Something is getting hot and like John & Kenny posted is causing the circut to break.

Farrell: A couple of years ago as I was on my way to the Spring Carlisle Swap Meet in PA., I had the same thing happen to me on my 1971 F-250 that I was towing a trailer with. I'd bet a dollar to a donut that you need to change out the headlight switch. Thats what I did and my problem was solved. After all, the headlight switches are the same from 1965-77. Hey look at it this way, if I am wrong you will get a free donut that you can munch on while your still trying to figure out what else it could be. What could be better than that.

There is a fix for this problem, it invoves the use of relays[a href="http://www.octm.com/dane/index41.htm"]http://www.octm.com/dane/index41.htm[/a] It is very dark here in Alaska in the winter and moose are common on the roadside so good lighting is very important.I thought this to be a good article, well written and an easy to perform mod saving $ on future headlight/dimmer switches.
