Auto or Stick

I was wondering what you guys prefer an automatic or standard transmission? I partial to a 5spd myself. I wish they would make an automatic with a manual type shifter. Not one of those stupid paddle shifters, I meen you shift it just like a standard but you don't have to clutch.

Manuals are definately more fun to drive on the street.. far less drivetrain power loss, and you can make 'em do anything you want.
Autos are also good, in certain applications... ie consistancy in drag racing or laid back easy cruising... I'd rather cruise in an auto over a stick.

Just a side note, the shifter and shift kit in my C-6 will hold any gear you want as long as you want... like a manual 1st is 1st, 2nd is 2nd, then D for Dummys and it'll shift automatically. It's not a paddle, it is a ratchet... pretty fun actually.. it'll shift as soon as you ask it too, won't delay it untill it's ready like most do.

I said manual because of the fixibility you can choose how you want to drive and it is a direct linkage that provides more power distrubted to the rear end.

I like a stick, but with my left knee having bone degenerating. I will have problems later. I find the 5 spd to much shifting in the city. I like the old 3 and 4 spd. I think anything more is overkill.
Auto is nice for cruising the highways with cruise control, but a stick gives you more power for climbing those steep hills. I notice most people never shift their auto when climbing hills with a load. Where they have to with the std.
Today too many people are spoiled by the auto. It makes them more lazy.

Both are great depending on the vehicle is. A five speed/overdrive in a 5.0 Mustang is nice and in a Crown Vic an auto/overdrive is great too. The thirteen speed in my gravel truck gets abit much after along hot day.

I've only owned 3 Auto's. One was OK, the others were Dodges. Oops, 4 actually. I forgot about my Dodge (again) work truck. Still, the Aerostar was the only auto I didn't mind. Definitely voting for Manual. It was already said, but I'll say it again. I can shift when I want.

I definitely prefer the manual. My Comet I just picked up has a Hurst shifter in it, that's pretty much like what you're looking for you slap it forward yo upshift and backwards to downshift, I think it would be hard to rig up in a truck and still make it feel good though. It's just too bad my car only has a 2 speed in it and the shifter is made for 3, I have to hit it twice to shift up and down.
