I have a 1999 ranger w/3.0 V6 that has a loud chatter coming from what sounds like the valve lifters when warming up. When I start it you cannot hear it. About 30 secs later you can hear it and gets pretty loud until the engine gets to operating temp.
Is this somthing I should worry about? The motor seems to run just fine. Is it something I can do about it . Is it a sign of something getting raedy to go bad ??
You most likely have one or more hydraulic lifters that have leaky check valves. Due to sludge, varnish or dirt. The oil inside the lifter is leaking out too quick, thus allowing the lifter to 'collapse', and allow the rocker arm to tap as it starts to push open the valve.
You could try one of the engine cleaner chemicals, or just try changing the oil. Sometimes an oil change will provide enough difference to clear up the problem.
When it is tapping, it is causing excess wear on the rocker and valve stem. It won't hurt to drive gently until it warms up. It can last a long time making the noise, but don't quote me on how long.
