Engine chatter
I went to go look at a 2005 F150 today with the 3v 5.4 and when it was warm and running noticed a slight chatter. It sounded like noise from the valve train or something. I asked the owner about it and he said it's always done that and his buddy's 09 does the same thing. Without hearing it, is there something common in these engines that makes noise? I can do spark plugs (even on this engine) but if it's in the valve train or something...I'd rather pass.

The injectors do make a slight "clicking" noise as they open and close. What you really need to watch for on 04-05 and some early 06 is the cam phaser noise. If it chatters like the clack of a small diesel at all RPMs then run away...fast. A slight click through the RPM range is typically the injectors.
