My dad gave me a 64 F-100 a couple weeks ago. I've noticed that I may need to add fluids. I want to keep my truck in the best shape possible. The truck has about 70,000 original miles. Both engineand tranny are original. I plan on using 5w-30 in the motor and 80w-90 in the tranny. Would these fluids be ok? Would something else be better in either? Also what brands would you suggest I use?

I have used Motorcraft,Kendall GT-1,Havoline, Mobil, and Pennzoil 10w30 oil with Motorcraft, Purolator, and Wix Filters in my 1969 F-100 360 engine for 134,000 miles without any problem. You can expect numerous opinions on the brand and weight reccomendation. The main thing is to use a SM quality oil and a good filter (NO fram) and change them regularly. 6 months or 6000 miles was the original reccomended interval which I use since mine is no longer a daily driver. If your transmission is a manual, the 80w90 should be fine. During my youth I worked at a full service gas station and serviced several mid 60's to mid 70's vehicles and we always used 80w90 gear oil in them. If your transmission is automatic the only choice is ATF Type F.
