Hi all! I have a 1960 F100. My girls told me last week that water was dripping into the cab, passengers side under the glove box. Didn't think to much about it..thought it was condensation or something. Fast forward this weekend. Drive into town and I see it dripping. Get to store. Turn it off. Shop. Come back to truck and it seems like it is pouring out of box. It's antifreeze. It didn't smell, so I tasted it. How could anyone or any animal think of drinking that? YUCKY! Anyway, I think it's the heater core. I am going on instinct and what I remember of my dad's truck and working on it with him from decades ago. Am I right? wrong? Also, where can I get a replacement heater core? I tried calling the 2 stores we have around here and they said they don't carry anything and don't know what to use as a replacement? I thought it would be pretty easy to find a replacement or we have brainless wonders working in our stores.
Oh yeah...anyone know where I can get a manual for the 1960 F100 straight 6? Ebay has none as of now. Our stores...*shaking head*...ok, we won't go through that again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Before you purchase a heater core check the hoses first they could be loose or cracked; if not you can take the core to a radaitor shop to have it repaired or take it to Advance/NAPA/Carquest?Auto Zone and match it up to one they have there.

The hoses running to the heater core are brand new. The antifreeze seems to be running/dripping from the bottom seam. I could be wrong. The auto parts stores books only go to 1965. And I know the '65 and the '60 don't match. So would it be safe to clamp the hoses and drive the beast into town with the core in? Don't feel like being stranded on the highway...LOL
Thanks, Kathyrae
I would pull the core out out and take it to be checked and maybe clean and repaint the heater shell while its out. Macs in NY should have the part if you want NOS or reproduction. I matched up one for my 55 several years ago at Auto Zone if the size is correct the year would not matter.

Also, not all trucks came with heaters - so there is no problems with bypassing the heater core until you get it fixed. Just remember that the hoses may not be the same size - some have a 3/4 inch inlet and a 5/8 inch outlet.
There are several work-arounds if that is the case. Most parts houses have a special tube for changing size that cost less than $5.
A search for heater core on ebay will yeild several sources if you want a new one.
Or, you could just plug both hoses in the interim.
When Mine crapped out, I just ran the output hose from the water pump into the input of the water pump and let it circulate. That gives you time to run around before it is fixed, and/or while it is in the radiator shop.
Kathy, I tried to send you an email but was told "You must wait 542941428 more seconds before you can send another email." That works out to a bit more than 17 years - so I expect you would have found a solution before you got my email.
Anyway, I was going to suggest that if you lived in Southern Oregon you join us in the Northern California chapter - we have members from Grants Pass and Medford, as well as other southern locations.
Also, it is better to have yours fixed so you know it will be good - but if you want I have an extra you can have. I have never ran water through it so I don't know if it is any good - (I would test it before I sent it) but then it is worth what you paid for it!
I use to live in both S. OR and N. Ca, but I've moved to N. OR now. Redirecting would work out so much better for me currently. I have family that lives just outside of Yreka and they plan on visiting in a month but not sure I want to wait that long. Thank you so much though! Tempting though still. I think I'll tackle the job of taking it out and chucking it on the counter at the parts store and bat my eyelashes and see if they'll help. Usually doesn't help me though.. LOL.
I would email you back but I have to be a member for 15 days and have 50 posts under my belt. And I'm sure there aren't many of you that want to see me talk to myself post after post til I get 50.
Thanks again! Kathyrae
Unless you are using something other than glycol based antifreeze it should have had a sweet taste. Was it oily? do you have AC on the truck? If you do it could be the AC fluid not antifreeze. If it's leaking that badly while running I'd expect it would have been hot enought to steam and you'd have seen a drop in the radiator coolant level.
Kathyrae, not sure if your truck used the fresh air heater or not. If it does I just had the same problem without the anti-freeze smell in the cab.
Found out it was the hot water valve control, that is located at least on the 53 F-100, on the firewall top passengers side. You will see where all the heater hoses hook up to, and if it is a valve check there first.
I was talking with Nifty Fifties this afternoon and they have replacements. Hope this may shed some hope for you.
Also I sure hear you on some of these self proclaimed parts persons, you would wonder where they find them.
Anyway good luck and hope you get the problem resolved.
Parts guys are the worst. Usually what I do nowadays is look up the part myself on the parts stores online databases, then I can go down to the store and just give them the part # that I need. It sure takes alot of the pain and suffering out of dealing with the mouth breathing counter morons.
Well I redirected the hoses. So one hose that started at the water pump and going to the heater is now going back to the water pump...and the hose from the heater...is going back to the heater. And it hasn't leaked woooohooooo. It was antifreeze though. It was sweet but in a very yucky way...kinda oily like the cheap frosting on some of the cakes you can get at Winco or Food 4 Less ya know. You could lick the roof of your mouth for hours and it would still be there. Radiator level was down before but now it hasn't moved an iota, yet. Oil though...THAT is another story. And the 'Drunkin' Monkey' steering. So I'll be looking for a gear box and pitman arm next....in Oregon...hint hint...LOL Kids are trying to talk me into power steering. I think they are getting tired of getting hit in the chin when I am turning, but I'm old school I think...and my arms are looking a wee little bit toner.
OK...so is a price of $50 - $60 bucks for a manual on my truck the going price nowadays? Did gas prices drive this up too or is that just what I get for having such an awesome truck?
Thanks again all,
Kathyrae
