looking for a new motor

I'm looking for a new motor, for a 1955 F100 and still have (I'm guessing) the original trans. 3 speed manual. Here's my question... Will a 289 or 302 bolt up to the existing transmission?

Sorry but it won't. However it's not a hard swap to do. Find a donor car that runs and go for it.

I agree, find a complete motor/trans and drop it in. The old 3spd. is a loser.

Welcome Danfish,

What are your plans for the truck? Is there a reason you want to keep the stock 3 speed manual tranny?

I will evenually change the trans too, but until I do, the existing 3 speed trans has been rebuilt and will take care of me until then. I guess I'm kinda hoping that if I decide to put in a 289 or a 302 it will bolt up to the existing 3 speed and when I decide to change to an automatic or 4 speed it won't have any problems there either.

It would be less work to do the swap as engine and trans rather engine to existing trans. And you'll only have to do it once.

It is possible that you can make the engine work with your 3 speed tranny - Ford used the same transmissions for years. It depends on the bell housing tranny bolt pattern, and how deep the housing is. The bell housing will be different for different engines, and may require a different lenght input shaft on the tranny.

So, to answer your question, it depends . . . maybe

Really, then explain how the one I had w/ a Badly Chipped & Cracked Case, that I had rebuilt, managed to still give Excellent service while Off-Roading, Hauling 2,500lb trailers, as well as regular Hwy/City driving?!.

You'll need an Adaptor Plate in order to achieve this & that can bw costly.
But why go to all that troulbe when all you need to do is find a 292/312 eingine that w/ the correct Bellhousing will simply Bolt-up to your current Trans?

If you are going to change it anyway, I would find a pickup, van, or car to pull engine/trans/and wiring harness out of. If you find a 70-80 model you should be able to find one with a rusted or trashed body then junk what you don't need.
As for your tranny, sell it. Their are still a lot of people that can use those.

Well, if I get a hold of a "Remanufactured" 292 V8 which is what the existing motor is I shouldn't have any problem bolting up w/ the existing 3 speed, right? I mean, it should be exactly the same. Further more, I don't want to hot rod it... not now anyway. No, at this point I want to keep as stock as I can.

Is the bellhousing a 5 bolt pattern like the earlier 60's? I'm curious to know. Does the tranny bolt to the bellhousing with 4 bolts?

That is correct - and a very good way to go. You could even use a 312 V8 replacement. All three engines are the same block.

The majority of the Remanufacturers have 292's & 312's listed in either Short or Long blocks & Basic, Hi-Per & any which way in between builds.
Exactly the same, other than subtle Internal changes for different year manufactures, the Exteriors are exactly the same.
The 312 Y-block would be a great one to do, as you would be able to procure all the T-bird Hi-Per bit & bobs to put on it.
