My 64 does that too, on mine it got froze over open then somone forced it shut now its up aganstthe truck. just get new hinges or a new hood. Also they might be tweaked causing it to go too far back. Is it a stock hood? i would suggest a new hood or new hinges (i would get new hinges less exspensive)
Your hinges ar worn out at the pivot points. Apparently the springs on these trucks were pretty strong and without lubrication, they wear pretty bad. Every truck I've found has had bad hinges.
Just for now, remove the springs and lubricate the pivot points. Use a broom handle to hold the hood up. Watch for a good set of hood hinges in the junk yards and snag a set when you have a chance.

Remove the hood, the plates that the bolts screw in to (in the hood) are supposed to float inside the sheet metal. Some times the plates rust tight and you run out of adjustment in the hinge. Once you have the hood off place it upside down on a blanket (watch for wife) so you don't scratch the paint. Then screw in on bolt in each plate and tap it with a hammer and oil up the slot in the hood when it freed up you note the plate will move a ton. You'll need to have a paper clip or coat hanger ect, to get the plate to line up with the slot when you reinstall the hood.
