This afternoon I found a puddle of diesel on top of my intake manifold, a started the motor and looked for leaks but found none. BTW its a '95 F250. Any ideas?
My 97 was leaking. When I got into it I found the fuel pump was leaking out the small hole in the bottom. Everything else looked dry. I assume a 95 is the same as a 97. Or how about the bottom hose going to the filter?
Clean out the valley area of the engine real good. Start the truck and look for the leak, it's kinda hard to find sometimes. Use a small dental mirror to get at the bottom of the fuel pump and filter housing. That's the most likely sources of your leak like trike1946 says above.
my 97 just had the same symptoms about 2 months or so ago. it was the fuel pump. when u replace it (or have it replaced) go ahead and replace the rubber fuel lines on the pump also, they have a tendency to go bad with age also.
hey guys is this a high dollor job or a pretty cheap deal what about the pump is this a high dollor item i got a 97 and just found a puddle under my truck and it was diesel and the valley had fuel there also
hey guys i found fuel in the valley of my 97 psd does any body no where to look to find the leak? is this a cheap fix ? is this a coomon prob. for the 7.3 diesel? also will it hurt to run the truck with this leak are there any way it would get in the motor oil
The pump from Ford is about $145.00. I think NAPA has it for $!05.00. With mine I had to pull the turbo. It is an E series. I also had to unbolt the fuel filter. It was easier to hook up the hoses. So I had to get the pump, the 3 hoses, the banjo gaskets, the O rings under the turbo, the seals at the end of the two fuel lines, the 2 exhaust gaskets under the turbo, and the rectangular gasket between the turbo and the exhaust Y pipe. Cost of gaskets was about $90.00. Then while I was at it I changed the air filters, and the fuel filter.
If the pump is leaking it will get worse, and I guess just quit.
The leak could be just a hose. But if you have an E series you will go through all the labor anyway so you might as well replace the pump while you are there.
After I replaced everything it ran great for a few days. Then today it developed a bad leak. When I pulled it apart to look it was the vacuum switch on the side of the fuel filter that went bad. $65.00 from Ford, and about an hour to get it and put it on.
trike 1946,
my truck is a 97 f -350 is there any way i could check this out to see if its coming from the pump? also would this leak cause it to mise a little? The best i can tell the fuel is laying in the back of the valley of the intake. also the vacuum switch on the side of the fuel filter where can i locate it
There is a hole in the bottom side of the pump. Maybe a 1/16". that is where mine was leaking. I am not sure which side of the pump it was on. but it is where it goes into the manifold. There is a little 45 degree bevel on the bottom where the hole is. Maybe use a small mirror. You might be able to do a fuel pressure test to see how it is pumping. The vacuum switch sticks out on the drivers side of the filter sideways. It looks like a sending unit. It should have a single wire attached to the end. If the fuel is only on the back part, and not in front of the pump, look at the banjo bolt on the back of the pump and the two fuel lines. One goes to each head. Are you sure it is fuel and not oil?
trike1946, thank helping me out i am new at the diesel thing i have done paid out over 4.000 on this truck with oil leaks and clutch at my local dealer they took the cab off to get the leaks fixed and now this fuel leak. now the banjo bolt. it is the big bolt that the two lines go to is this right? can the bolt be replaced or orings this is where i think it might be comeing from. (i think) i have cleaned everthing that i can get to tonite to see if i can find the leak. i started the truck up and did not see any fuel i let it run for just a few mins. and did not find anything wet (yet) will this fuel leak get in the motor and hurt it again thanks if you have any more info please let me know. oldirtracer saltville va.
