i was driving my brothers '96 ranger to the store. i got to a stop-light and when it turned green and i started to go, the truck stalled and turned off. as if i had dropped the clutch with no gas! i went to turn the truck back on, but there was NO battery power, nothing would turn on.
after looking under the hood and checking the battery cables, i noticed that new cables had been slpiced onto the old cable and one of the splices were loose. i got a tow home and re-spliced it, and tried again. i had power this time, but as soon as i clicked the ignition to start, it clicked, then i had no power again. i have no power untill i take the battery cable off and put it back on.
i have NO idea what happend!! all of my grounds are good.. im lost.
Spliced battery cables are not the best of ideas. Sounds like you have a connection issue at that splice. Go buy a brand new one and install (no splicing in a section); they are dirt cheap.
Bill is correct that is classic sign of bad connection, and is very common with dirty terminals so when you replace the battery cables be sure and clean the battery terminals real well and tighten them properly and your problems should be resolved.
ive got a question for y'all.. my mom called AAA yesterday after the car wouldnt start, and they tried jumping hte truck. it wouldnt even jump!
the only way i get power from the battery is if i disconnect and reconect the battery. then as soon as i try to start it again, i lose the power again. its almost as if there some kinda switch turning it off!!
does that still sound like a battery connection problem? i dont really know.. i just know engine theory.. electrical stuff is beyond me
Sounds like dirty battery terminals and posts, if I read this correctly. A remote thought would be a busted battery post inside the battery, where it connects to the plates. However, for this to happen you or a previous owner probably did something to the battery to promote this. This is not very common at all.
