I am buying my frist truck and i cant think of a better truck for my frist one then a drw 4x4 2001 psd cc, lb i live in southwestern wisconsin i have been waiting for the moment since a boy to go 4x4ing. I would like some tips on how to have fun offroading and not get stuck. I have all the gear such as about 45 foot in chains, 2 ***-a-longs, 2 tree straps, tow strap, a winch for the front of the truck 12000 lbs rating. I know from driveing my car that when i have gotting stuck that slowing down or stoping was the worst mistake you can make. what orther tips and stuff to watch out for ....do you guys have.
Thanks
like bronco said drw is bad for offroading its way to long to fit into most trails and if you do get stuck good luck finding a truck to get you out. if you want a truck for 4x4ing find yourself a short wheel base truck. lighter the better and with the biggest motor and tires then when you do get stuck you wont have to have 3 trucks to pull you out
Well i have to have DRW with the loads i would be towing. so its just something i will have to deal with. plus 3 trucks....i am in wisconsin....do u know how many tractors in this state more more then then there is people i am sure....1 tractor could easyly pull me out
lol.... make sure its a big tractor then. i thought the same thing when a kubota tractor came to pull out my 98 ranger. it almost got stuck too and it wasnt one of the little tiny ones either. but i know what ya mean i live in illinois and tractors are plenty ful here too. good luck too ya. heres a thought for ya thou why not buy yourself a little ranger for 4x4ing. tthere great trucks offroad and can be built and lifted fairly easy and cheap that way your not breaking your work truck.. just a thought thou.
yes thats true about the ranger......its just my inlaws live in 300 acres and we farm the land and me and my wife are getting ready to buy 170 acres to farm that. i am gonna need to drive my truck around the farm....and what not. We grow alf alfa hay my father in law has a 100 hp ford so his tractor would work. Then i have a 75 hhp john deere. its just i amm gonna be useing my 4x4 a long ways from home and when it comes to offroading knowledge helps alot......i just doint know after hearinf this if it will overcome DRW.....lol
only way not to get stuck is to not get in the soft stuff. you WILL get stuck. i dont care what rig you have or how good of a driver you are, everyone gets stuck. your main concern SHOULD be how to get that massive beast out once you are axle deep.
other than that.... hit the pedal as hard you can and dont let up till you stopped moving! even then... try backing up and hit it again, although by that point your chances of clawing out are cut in half b/c you have lost all momentum!
Too many situations to tell you how to deal with all of them. You have already dealt with your biggest issue by having tractors and equipment lined up in advance for when you do need them. Start small and drive through stuff you know you can handle. Work your way into worse and worse stuff until you know the trucks limits and how to get the most from her. Relax, keep learning and enjoy it.
Just some food for though; if you're going to wheel your dually, look into Super Swamper narrow TSL's for your rear wheels http://www.intercotire.com/site32.php
If it were me, I'd ask around and see if anybody has a late 70's 4x4 they would part with cheap. You could probably write it off too, if you make it a "farm vehicle". If you feel like driving down to Indiana, I can get you a 76 F-250 Highboy for $500.
