I never use straps....I always break them...but I am yet to break a chain....and I jerk by backing up to their bumper and holdin' in to the carpet.....always works too!....just as long as you get a good chain, and not some sissy little one.
> so they don't have as much "fling" when they break.
Well, the F-350 bumper broke first, but, when the chain let go it went over my open BII hood, over my roof and slapped by tailgate in the "behind". I would say chains have some "fling" to them if they break.

I agree. I have broken chain pulling down 3-4 ton trees that got hung. You have to do some serious yanking to break just a 5/16 transport/sch 70 chain, which I have done. Mine only broke after giving my F-100 a good clutch dump and 20 foot start with a 390 and NP435. I posted pictures here somewhere.

Agreed.
I have pulled tractors (as in tractor trailers) out of stucks with a F-350 with 1/2" chain with a running yank where two tractors trying to do it with big straps failed, that broke like elastics. imo, You have to do something really brutal to break 1/2" chain and I don't think you could do it with a light truck. Chain works for me too.
In my truck/van I keep 25 feet of 1/4" cable (on the road tows) and 25 feet of 5/16 chain for mild stucks. The only thing bad about 1/2" chain is dragging it through muck to attach it to the other truck because 25-50 feet of it is pretty heavy.
Of all the Ford trucks out there a 7.3 DRW, LB, Crew cab is the worst ever for off-roading. Simply because it would be too long, too wide with dually fenders popping out and mine weighs about 8.5K pounds dry. Pulling a mountain using F 350dually is a different story altogether tough. Just my thought and for that kind of investment I would rather put it for other use…
screw that man, you need to jack that sucker to the moon and fit 6 huge friggin tires on it. Get some fatter ones for the front. Look at some of the military vehicles, theyre far from light on have to traverse anything almost. The heavier the truck is the more ground clearance and bigger tires you need...because its going to sink you deeper in the soft stuff.
