Unhappy Pitman arm removal

Does anyone know the best way to remove the pitman arm on a 2005? I bought the largest tool I could find and it is still too small to fit over arm for removal.

Help???

I had to grind the tool to make it fit. Over the arm on my 04. then it worked just fine.

In all seriousness, find a bigger puller. I borrowed the puller I used from the loan counter at Pep-Boys. It's important that the pitman arm come straight off the shaft. The shafts on these steering boxes have been known to break if they're bent side-to-side at all. The right puller is a PITA to find, but it's worth it to have.

Just buy the 10 dollar one you can get at any auto parts store and grind the inside down equalily on both sides just enough to slide over the arm. Thats what I did with mine and i've done five lifts with it and its held up fine. Just be sure to hit the end of the puller bolt every time you tighten it up then it will pop right off. I have done this several times and trust me it works great, dont buy an expensive puller that you will probably only use once.

I've seen more than one steering box fail due to this method.

You dont beat the crap out of it, you just whack the end of the bolt every so often as you tighten it down.

All I can say is "be careful", we had the shaft break while driving, not fun.

I have had this same problem, luckily my father-in-law had a set of gear pullers that were big enough. It was a PITA, but it just makes me love my truck that much more when the components are too big for conventional tools.
