Well the day has come. The day I said would never happen. There will indeed be a foriegn vehicle parked next to my truck in the garage in a few weeks. We traded in my wifes Trailblazer for a Toyota Camry w/ a Hybrid no less. We wanted something with a little better mpg. We looked at domestic vehicles and quite honestly they really do not compare well to some of the foreign jobbers. Especially when it came to mpg, warranty and safety. I'm just not seeing a bright future for th big 3 anytime soon.
I agree D-Max. My Wife has been driving a Toyota Prius hybrid for the past two months, it's 'stickered' for use in the HOV lane. We considered a Ford but I really believe the Toyota hybrid has been proven. She needs reliability and top mpg and for us that meant purchasing a Toyota.
It's going to be real interesting when they release a Diesel truck.
I understand! But, we've got to buy what's best for us. Especially when our Wife is going to drive it on a daily basis. I admit that brand loyalty played a part when I purchased my truck, but my Wife has no such feelings about vehicles. I'm now thinking that it matters much less who makes it and much more that it's engineered and built well. So it goes....
DMAX, if it makes you feel any better the Toyota Camry is assembled in Georgetown, Kentucky with 55% of it's parts coming fron the USA with only 30% coming from Japan. It's more American made than foriegn, hope this helps some.
I've been trying to find a way to slip in my earth shattering news......here it goes;
A few months ago, the biggest diesel hater on these boards picked up an '06 VW Jetta TDI for the wife. Even though it has a few of the diesel traits I can't stand, for the most part it's an excellent car.
Last weekend I picked up an old Mercedes 300SD that will run on waste vegtable oil. This car has ALL the traits of why I HATE diesels..LOL!!!
These 2 cars will save me over $500 a month in fuel costs.......
Like mentioned above; we have to do what's right for us and while I realize my actions are inconsequential to the oil companies.....it makes me feel better to contribute less to that deseased/corrupt industry.
Dayum. If it's any help, though, a good friend has a Hybrid Camry ordered as a replacement to.... get this.... a two year old BMW 7-series. And no, he's pretty well off- it's not about money.

It is good to know what other cars you considered and the difference in MPG...
The HOV lane thing for hybrids is an interesting incentive.
Is anyone forecasting the effect of low sulfur diesel on the domestic auto companies (or has that been discussed and I overlooked it)?
My wife and I had a Toyota Camry and its a great car and this is coming from a BIG FORD guy. We had this car for a few years and then traded it in on an 03 Explorer. I like the Explorer better because it sits higher and its smoother riding than the car. You have to get whats best for you though so dont worry.
However not only is that car cheap to run - it will go for ever and ever...
Fred, this thing "ONLY" has 190,000 miles on it. I've seen 'em on flea bay with 300,000+ miles for double what I paid.
It also has all service records from new........all windows and sunroof work, cruise works. Dash and seats have 0 cracks/tears!!
The only ***** in the armor is the A/C is TU.........hope it's just some o-rings and a re-charge.
But talk about the stereotypical diesel .....noisey, stinky, shakey 5 cylinder at idle, un-Godly turbo lag.............oh well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!!!
(I've read the 6 cylinder is 100% more refined but not nearly as indestructable)
