I am researching how to install a 5.0 in my '65 F100. One post describes how a c4 will fit but a C6 requires modifications. My donor car is a '91 Cougar with a 5.0 and 4 spd automatic. What is this 4 speed called? Thanks.
I think they were the E4OD? not 100% sure... That may have been the ones in the trucks. You should be able to stop by a tranny shop, and they could give you the lowdown on what is good and bad in the Ford Tranny's

There is a transmission spoters guide in the article section. Also there is a sbf c-6 that doesn't need any modifications to the ribs on top of the case near the tranmission tunnel.
The C4s fitment means the bell housing will clear the crossmember on the way back out. A c6 will not. no how no way. An AOD A40D May or may not. THe Stock COM will not clear without removal of the crossmember. In 65 ford for Automatic equipped trucks only provided the tie crossmember with bolts. All manual trucks had this crossmember rivited. So unless you wanted to pull the engine every time the trans is worked on it needs to be made removable.
Hence the C4 vs C6 vs AOD All fit and clear the cab floor with room to spare but will not be removable without the modifications to the crossmember.
My truck is currently a 3 spd manual. The truck is dissassembled; however if I am thinking about the correct part (removable what I think is the crossmember transmission support which has two bolts on each side) someone must have already removed the rivets. Regardless it sounds like installing the AOD will be fairly simple. I hope I can find the correct motor motor. Obviously I will also need to find the automatic pedal setup.... Thanks!
