Mine is in this recall. It's about time.

I've had that switch disconnected for a long time. Every time I'm under the hood checking the oil, I check for leaks at that switch.

What BURNS me (pun intended) is this. The switch leaks brake-fluid. I've heard of it appearing on the outside of the switch. Doesn't that mean that if left alone too long, my master cylinder will run out of fluid? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I suspect a few things about this particular recall at this time:

The fuse in the harness is a CHEAP fix. Replacing the switch, with brake fluid, and maybe even bleeding, that's a lot of labor. You can have a monkey put in that new harness.

As to the timing of the recall, it's always good to push off bad numbers to the next year if possible. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Ford has pushed us SD's to the side for a while to make sure they 1) Don't overload their dealer's service depts, and 2) stretch the cost of the recall out as long as possible. The numbers for this recall will appear on 2006's books, not 2005.

The vehicles being recalled are: certain model year 1994 to 2002 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks; 2000-2002 Excursion SUVs; 1994 to 1996 Econoline vans; 1996 to 2002 E-450 vans and 1998 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs.

On most of its models, Ford designed the switch to be powered -- or "hot" -- at all times, even when the vehicle is off. Inside the switch, a thin film barrier separates brake fluid from the switch's electrical components.
Seems to me that the design of having the switch powered as "HOT" all the time is the problem. But on a different note, I am wondering why no recall on the '03 and '04 SD's??? Did FORD actually make those changes back then??? I am going to go look at my switch after work today. Now I am curious...

Biz, I don't think they fixed it in the '03/04. Stay tuned. I wonder if it'll be recalled in 2007?

I think Captchas had his master cylinder switch leak on him, and his is an '05. Not sure if the line is hot all the time though on his.

Still, the problem is the leaky switch AND the hot-at-all-time feeder.

But like I said... What happens when that switch leaks enough and you don't notice it until it's too late?

I have half a mind (of the half that's left) to unscrew the darn thing and put a plug in it's place. And then wire the cruise-control disconnect to the brake light switch. Sheesh.

Is the offending switch the one that is located at the end of the master cylinder?

Yeah, forward-most, on the bottom.

If you're worried about it, disconnect it. You won't have cruise control, but ....

To me, that's an unacceptable resolution. The hell with FoMoCo. I'll fix it myself. I'll be changing this to shut off with the brake lights or a pedal switch just like my Pontiac.

I'll report back tonight if mine is hot all the time or not.

Sure enough, on my '99 it's hot with the key off. I'll be adding a relay to the system that only feeds 12 volts triggered either from a wire that is hot while running or only after you've hit the On button on the steering wheel.

Now that I think about it, wiring to the brake light circuit has a drawback. If you blow the brake light fuse, you'll lose the trigger to kill the CC.

So if the design intent is to keep it hot all the time to prevent an open circuit any chance of being unable to discontinue cruise control how is Ford's fix of putting in a fused harness going to allow for the safety measure of being able to discontinue criuse if the fused harness open's???. If cruise is not engaged and the 12 Vdc hot to the switch is opened is your cruise control prevented from engaging. On a working system if the cruise control is engaged what happens if you remove the 12V hot line to the switch? Does your cruise immediately dis-engage? I'm trying to understand Ford's design theory in having that line hot all the time.
