Would I be able to run a 302 hyd flat tappet cam-(non HO) in a 351w as long as I wire it to run the the 302 firing order and use the right pushrods? The cam is a 270 duration and it's going in a car. Any help appreciated.
The flat tappet 260/289/302 and 351W cams are very interchangeable. For all purposes identical except for the firing order. Just change a couple of your spark plug wires around on the distributor so your ignition firing order matches the firing order of the camshaft. No other changes necessary. People have been doing just this swap for many years because you have a bunch of choices in aftermarket 302 cams but pickings are much slimmer for 351W's.
yeah i just had a thread about this. One fella claims their is huge difference in non HO 302 cams and 351W cams. You will take a pretty big power cut putting that stocker from non HO 302 into your windsor. i am putting a 351W HO cam in my stocker 302 for a little more bite, it's just a tuff truck so not really worth a new cam for. We'll see how she does.
Thanks guys for the responses.I did a search but really didnt see the answers I wanted. Found a decent deal on a CompCams 270h, and wanted to know before i spent the $$$.
I always recommend a new cam rather than reusing an old one....you can't tell if it's wiped by looking or feeling it so if you can get a new one do it!!!
To reuse a flat tappet cam by rights you should use the exact same lifters in the exact same locations so the wear patterns match.. but that's assuming you are putting it back in the same block it came out of. Different blocks will have slightly different bore alignments so the cam and lifters will wear differently. That means you are technically breaking it in all over again. It can work but it could also continue to wear down after breakin. People have done this without issue.. but I have also seen cams lobes worn almost completely round from this. For the price of a new cam and lifter package... it's hardly worth the hastle.
What car is this going into? I had the same exact cam in a 302 in an f150. It had No bottom end but once you got to about 3000 it took off. Has a Nice lope too it also, sounds real good with a gear drive. If you can get the cam and new lifters for under $100, do it. If not, Delta cams can regrind you the same cam with lifters for that, thats what I did.
That cam will be great in a mustang, make sure you get better rear gears though. 3.73's would really get it moving. If you stay with the 2.73's or 3.08s you have, it will only enhance the lack of low end power.
