ok heres the deal... im rebuilding the 302 thats in my 86 grand marquis... multiport injection as it sits now but im having issues with it... so im converting to propane carburetion and putting it in a different car... probably- and dont laugh- a 1974 pinto hatchback. my questions are as follows- will i be able to use my stock heads and just bolt a carb intake in? i know my other project- a 545 stroker- wouldnt let me use fuelie heads. will i have to get a new distributor? if so id probably go crane ignition or maybe msd. putting a fms cam in it as im pretty sure its a factory roller block but ill see when i take the engine apart. debating a 347 stroker but probably wont go that route. im hoping to get the whole swap done and engine running for about 2500 dollars... propane setup will cost about 700 of that so ive got about 1800 left to spend... already got the intake.
Sure you can swap to a carb set-up. The intake is a bolt in. You will need a different distributor. The factory one is computer controlled TFI. Get one with a steel gear if it's a roller motor.
If that's indeed a roller block, it's the early one (E5AE) The later roller blocks are stronger in case you decide to stroke it. It also has likely got the E6SE heads there too, those are the high swirl, lo-po heads. The valves are sunk deeper into the heads and the pistons won't have valve reliefs if you choose to swap heads and cams. I'm not sure with those heads you'll see any benefit to a larger cam, the valves are pretty shrouded.
