Hey there I recently bought a 2001 ford escape so far its been great hard to admit after driving chevy my whole life but anyway just had a quick question. I just bought a hidden hitch and am getting ready to install it. I also am going to do the wiring I think I am just going with the flat 4 setup but where do I find the ends to connect it to on my escape on my chevy they were just tucked in the bumper do I have to connect it right to the tail lights or something and also is a flat 4 the easiest for wiring or is there something better I just need it for a uhaul and some light trailer pulling any help thanks
The flat 4 plug is what would have come from the factory if your Escape had the tow package option. My wife has ours at work today but if I remember tonight I'll take a look to see where the wiring on hers is connected (its someplace behind the rear bumper).
Hey thanks for the info I don't think my escape came with a tow package and I looked up all around the rear bumper and I can't find anything I don't know if there is anything there or not I sure its somewhere easy to find I'm just not used to ford thats all but if you could check to see exactly where the flat 4 hook up comes from that would be great thanks
My flat 4 plug is mounted just slightly left of center under the rear bumper. From there, the wiring enters the "passenger" compartment through a rubber grommet at the rear of the spare tire compartment. I gotta believe that you have a plug where I have a grommet. Once the wiring enters the vehicle it makes a sharp left turn and disappears below the left side trim panel at the rear of the car. My guess is that this panel has to be removed to wire the car. I don't know if you have already gotten this done, but I would be tempted to take it down to a U-Haul and let them do it.
If you did not have the tow package stock like me you have to install the wiring yourself. It is a cheap kit but takes a while to install because of the direct power from the battery. You must drill a hole and run the wire inside under the carpet. At least that is the eaisiest way I found to do it. Then drill another hole through the firewall. The other connections to the signals and brakes are simple. Good Luck.
My son had a 2001 Escape with a harness and doesn't tow.
I have a 2001 Escape with no tow harness and want to tow. So I changed the hitch, 4-pole plug and the connector pigtail into the drivers side quarter trim panel from his vehicle to mine. All factory parts and connections. But I do not get any power to any of the terminals on the hitch plug even though my tail / brake / turn signals function. Can anybody tell me what I forgot? Somebody said there is an underhood harness connection to make. Any ideas? Thank you.
You need the upgraded turn signal relay SF621. To access it you pop of the end cap of the dash on the drivers side. You can push it out from under the dash. After you did that you'll see the blue relay. The new one is yellow. Pretty simple overall. I had to order mine from rockauto nobody else had it and the dealers didn't even know what I was talking about.
