I am curious if anyone has done their Silver Birch Expy, to see the color and results. I have been looking at the Krylon Fusion, but not seeing what seems to be a good choice as a color for the cladding.
Has anyone else had problems with the lower exterior plastic trim on either side of a silver '03 FX4 Expedition bleaching or fading??
While I haven't experienced this on my Expy, on other vehicles I have found that if I get careless when waxing the vehicle and get wax on the plastic pieces, it will result in fading and/or bleaching type of result. The waxes typically say 'not for use on plastic' and they are serious. If I get some wax on the plastic, I take some Armorall or similar and put that on the plastic - seems to prevent the problem.
Oh yeah I also had the very same problem with them Fading and Vibrating at freeway speeds.
While it was still under warranty I brought it in, told my Service Advisor and they were replaced FOC . I have a good relationship with my FORDDealership/Advisor. He's aware of my FORDDealership Experience, so my concerns / requests have always resulted in my satisfaction . What that means is that I'm not afraid to ask for anything. You'd be surprised how far they'll go to satisfy a customer...
It's been well over a year and the new ones are still "Lookin' Good!".
Pappy,
I bought the paint at a local auto paint supplier, I used a conventional automotive one quart spray gun, I used a friends makeshift booth. I didn't sand the plastic but I did use plastic adhesive promoter/primer and made sure that the panels were cleaned thoroughly with a degreeser/cleaner. I applied about 4 coats of base and four coats of clear.
All the materials that I used where PPG brand.
Where can you find the TSB? I own a Silver 03 XLT EXPY and I really need to check into getting them replaced. I am a female so painting them will have to be done profossionally, I would not have a clue.
Here's all you should have to do: Go to your FORD dealership talk to a Service Advisor/Writer and tell them what's up (plastic bleaching/fading).
If he says anything but he'll have R&R'd (Removed and Replaced) simply tell Him (or Her) that you would like to speak to the Service Manager. Service Manager's hate to be bothered by petty little things and Service Advisor's hate it when you go over their heads.
That should be all that's necessary to have them replaced under warranty (unless your past 3/36,000 and don't have an extended warranty.).
Tell me about your experience with your local FORD dealership?
P.S. If all goes well then they'll ask you to bring the Comment Card that FORD will send you back to them (the dealership) in for a Free Oil Change, don't do it!
Those cards come directly from Dearborn and are worth their weight in Gold (they'll want to fill it out for themselves).
You just tell them that you're aware of their value and will fill it out on your own...
Don't own an expy but this is also common on jeep wrangler fender flares, I painted mine w/ Krylon Fusion (basically its paint the eats into the plastic so it really changes the plastics color) I think I used semi gloss or flat (don't remember which) black and it looks almost brand new, been over a year and they still look great

Mezkin,
How much basecoat and how much clearcoat did you use to do the job? I'm looking at the options on this PaintScratch.com website and it all looks pretty good but i'm not sure how much i'll need to buy. I obviously need enough to do it all, but at the same time, I certainly don't want to over buy anything either.
