trouble with E4OD

I have a 92 f150 5.8/E4OD. For the last couple of weeks, the transmission has been acting up after driving for a while (20 miles or so). It will shift all the way into OD and seems like the TC is locking up, but then it will act as though it's come completely out of gear (you hit the gas and it just revs). If you back off the throttle, it will go back into "gear" and drive normally. I've had it do this several times lately, just wondering if it could be TC or is it internal to the transmission or could it be a sensor/computer issue. Thanks in advance!

when was the fluid last changed?

drain pan, torque convertor and put in a new filter.

fluid breaks down from heat so worth changing regularly.

I'm not sure when it was last changed. The truck has 52k miles on it (yes, it's a 92). I bought it about 5 months ago and have not changed the fluid. I'm due for an oil change, will add trans fluid and filter to my list. Previous owner used it to tow a boat from texas to florida and back a few times (and I towed a 25ft camper with it a couple months ago), so I'm sure the fluid has seen better days. Will let you know what happens after the fluid change.

to drain t. convertor, remove rubber plug at bottom of t.c., tap starter until drain lines up, then drain.

unless you do this you are wasting your time.

i also use lucas trans. treatment.

This sounds like a bigger problem than old fluid, hope I am wrong. I am no tranny expert but it sounds like the clutches are going bad.

Towing is severe duty so your fluid should have been changed every 12K miles or so according to the manual. The early E4Ods had some weaknesses and towing would bring them out.

Drop the pan and inspect for particles color and smell. If you have a lot of pepper flakes that is clutch, metal flakes is bad, black brown or pink fluid is not good. Smokey smell is bad.
Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I will post an update once I've dropped the pan and drained the fluid. Thanks for the advice.

I had another thought on this. I am planning on replacing the fluid in the next day or so, but I was thinking about the clutches. I've had transmissions in the past (C5 specifically) where the clutches burned out and if I recall the firmness of the shifts also decreased when the clutches were worn to the point of slipping. I'm still getting rock solid, kick you in the back of the seat shifts in all gears. Am I way off thinking it could be something else or am I remembering incorrectly?
