I have a 63 P/U that I'm going to repaint. On inspection of the roof, I noticed a "bondo" looking substance in the rain gutter on the frontside near the windshield. Was this a factory sealing glue that was put in to seal the seam on the roof panel and the windshield frame? It's cracking and I would just remove it with a chisel most likely.
I was wondering about that myself. Mine is in the rain rail and goes completely around the whole cab. I was think actually thinking of cutting my totally off and welding the seams together.
It is caulking at least thats what they call it. You can get it most auto paint supply places. The worst part of the job is you have to get all the old stuff out and any underlying rust with it. I was told to use a dental pick and wire brush. Get it all clean and primed then caulk it like you would your bathtub. Oh ya it does run all the way around the rain gutter.
A thin wire wheel on a drill makes getting most of it out much easier.
I suggest you play with the seam sealer before actually putting it in your truck -- the stuff I used was tough to handle and not water soluble so smoothing it out after you put it in was a bit of a challenge.
Make sure you treat all the rust really well before putting new seam sealer in place.
Thanks guys. Any idea who might sell a replacement rail? I think I am going to just replace mine out right. That way I am not farting around with what will be just a temp fix in the long run.
