Need help getting a measurement

Hey Bronco guys!

I need your help!

I'm considering putting a bronco 32 gal gas tank in my truck and need some measurements to see if it will fit past my exhaust system.

I havn't finalized specific measurement spots yet...but from first look I think I just need a couple. I will look again tomorrow morning to see if I need more measurements, but try this one first...

I'll try to explain it as best as I can...

Stand on the side of your rig near the rear tire while bending your head down to about level with the bottom of the frame. You'd be looking across the back of the bronco towards the other rear tire. When you line your head up with the front of the gas tank, you can see how far down that front corner of the gas tank hangs down from the frame. Could you measure at the front corners (towards the cab) of the gas tank how low it hangs from below the bottom of the frame? Doesn't have to be super accurate. I think you'd just have to stick your hand in the wheel well with a tape measure to get it...

My 19 gal tank doesn't hang down much at all at the front corners...and I have about 6-7" of clearance from my exhaust system. I need to see if I can get that larger tank in there w/o changing my exhaust system.

Thank you!

Will attempt to do this in the morning... haven't been home long enough or even during daylight hours to take the measurement.

Ok, at the front corners, the tank hangs about 7.5-8" below the frame if you include the skid plat that comes on it. Remove the skid plate and you lose about 3/4-1" of depth making the measurement approximately 6 3/4-7" of tank below the frame. The tank does taper back as it gets deeper but I took the measruement straight down from the rail at the lowest point on the front corners of the tank. Hope this helps. The truck is going in for "cosmetic surgery" sometime this week so let me know if you need any other measurements.

Thanks!

So at the front corners of the tank, it hangs about 7" down from the bottom end of the framerail (as if u put a straightedge across). Ok cool...

My main concern is the drivers side tailpipe. It comes under where the old tank was...so on the drivers side front corner of the tank is probably my trouble spot.

Hmm...I might only require minor tailpipe work to make it work...but it's another $300 just for the gas tank, fuel pump, and sending unit with other little odds and ends like the brackets. I've already spent like $300 so I'll have to add it up and see if I want to do this right now or later.

I think I might order the tank and return it if I need to...

Does that seam around the tank hang below the frame rail? It didn't on my original tank.

Here's what I'm looking at...

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fbr/0111.html

I'll take a look tomorrow morning and see if I need any more measurements. Thanks.

Nope, the seam is above the bottom of the rail. And yes to the method of measurement... I used and scale rule and a 30/60/90 drafting triangle to take the measurement to be certain I was measuring perpendicular from the frame rail down.

Thanks very much for the measurement...

Looks like it's not going to fit. However...it seems like I may only need a minor exhaust modification to make it work...if my passanger side clears than I will only need to modify the drivers side.

My drivers side pipe hangs about 4" from the framerail and it basically cuts the corner of the tank off so to speak...it'll hit.

So I think if I cut it off and have the local shop patch it up and put the tip back on it'll be fine and not take more than an hour or so. They bent up my pipes in no time so it should be cheap.

I might go ahead and purchase the parts and try to fit that tank in.

I need one more measurement if you could...

I need to know the placement (width) of the tank inbetween the rails...I need a measurement from the side of the gas tank at the front and rear...to the lower edge of the framerail.

The framerail is a C channel...I need the measurement to the edge of the lower C (not the inside face of the framerail).

My pipes tuck inside and below that C-channel frame a little and my old tank had enough room but I'm not sure if the bronco tank will just pass right by it.

If it hits both pipes like that than I might not do it as it would require too extensive of an exhaust modification.

Ok, the 93 went in for her facelift and some much-needed chemotherapy (cancer treatment). But not to worry, I have the frame and tank from the 92 still sitting out back. I'll give it a look and see what I can come up with. I do know that the Bronco exhaust exits the passenger side and I believe the tank leaves a little more room on that side of the frame for the exhaust to pass by. Again, I'll double check and post with some "real" info.

Hey, how is the bronco tank held in and supported?

On my two tanks, the rear one has straps on top of the tank, and large metal ones below (also holds spare). The front tank just has thin metal straps that wrap around the bottom.

What's the bronco use? Just two small straps that wrap around the bottom?

I'm looking at this diagram...
